Hi!

I explored is here any other similar question/submit but I didn't find. So don't rush and instantly mark this message as a duplicate. Read this without hurry.

Here's my situation (and I'm not alone): I've a telephone subscription. With that I can use 4G connection. If I'm calling much by traditional way I'll have big bill.

An answer to this problem is internet phone calling (at least in Finland), as we all know. Next issue is that internet phone calling feature is behind of many different applications (and they are Android apps :( ). What I know at the moment is I can make internet calls only if the person with whom I discuss uses the same application. Why this system has built to be so difficult?!?!?

I have an idea, and I'm serious with this case. We know that we don't use many applications to make a traditional phone call. That feature has made as a part of smartphone, too. It's so simple! So: can Jolla develop internet call feature as a part of smartphone, too, just like traditional phone calling is? So there wouldn't be need for many applications for internet calling. I believe there will not be upcoming Sailfish versions for internet phone calling apps. I seriously believe that internet calling is a big deal in near future so it would be a big mistake if Jolla will ignore internet calling.

This idea maybe isn't easy to fulfill but at least I want to hear answers. And I think there will be many issues to solve. But I wish you would at least thinking about my idea.

P.S: sorry my bad English. Tell me if you didn't undersand something.

Kindest regards: Ari Järviö

I don't really understand what you want. There is no "internet calling". There are a number of different protocols to handle voice and/or video calls over TCP/IP. Some are open standards (like SIP), some are proprietary (like Skype). Now what is your question about? Do you expect Jolla to develop yet another protocol? Do you want them to include one of the existing protocols into the voicecall UI? If so, which one? Do you want them to include all major protocols?

Actually it has been done years ago by Nokia, both in Symbian and Maemo. I could switch between SIP-Calls and traditional voice calls from within the UI. Jolla wouldn't have to re-invent the wheel here. If this is what you have in mind. (And if this is what you have in mind, it's a duplicate as walker points out below.)

You have to understand I'm just a normal phone user. I don't know many difficult terms as you know. I'm only trying to write simple english so don't try to confuse.

The point is I'm still trying to bring this theme in simple language.

@chemist and others, when closing a question as "duplicate", could you please add a comment with a link to the question you think this is a duplicate of?

(This is not a complaint and definitely not aimed at @chemist specifically. I see far too many questions closed as "duplicate" without a slightest clue where the supposed original is. I consider including a link a matter of common courtesy and I think it should be mandated by the rules. Ideally the forum software should not allow to close a question as "duplicate" without providing the link but sadly we do not live in an ideal world.)

@pichlo While I agree in general (I see questions closed as duplicate with no link to the original question, and I think that shouldn't happen), in this special case the desired link is given: walker provided it in his answer, in the answer that was accepted. That should do I guess, it wouldn't be necessary to copypaste the information into yet another comment.

@pichlo the link is in the first answer below... answer is marked accepted too - I almost always provide a link or if I close it there is already a link provided

I believe SIP would fit in the scenario you described. There are a few posts about it already, one example would be: https://together.jolla.com/question/415/sip-voip-native-integration/.

As you can see, we're not there yet, but there's a big demand for it :)

SIP and other VoIP protocols:

Oh these things means same what I meant. That's great to see there're other people, too, who wants same thing.

However, I want yet that Jolla would answer to us about this question. I think it's wrong if only Jolla fans are talking about this.

The native SIP client on the Nokia E63 was brilliant but it was an absolute pig on battery so only used it for outgoing calls.

Saved a fortune on roaming costs by strolling into residential areas while abroad and picking up an open Wifi AP to use this on

It's called VoLTE or Voice over LTE. Some new phones support it out of the box. But I'm not sure Jolla really need it right now.

The chipset of the phone is capable of VOLTE If Jolla phone and Intex aquafish are having same specs, as I am sure about the hardwares of Intex Aquafish. I believe that the VOLTE feature can be enabled by firmware tweak or upgrade. Since Xiaomi has provided volte functionality through FOTA updates to few of their handset models. All I want to know now is whether the Jolla team have any plan of such an update in future... If they make it possible then that will break all the grounds and I will proudly recommend Sailfish to all my friends with more pride than I do it now. Hope someone replies to this comment as well. I kindly invite the attention of admins to make this a request from my side.
