SailfishOS derives from the RedHat branch which is an rpm-based (rpm as in redhat package manager) system.
Apt, on the other hand, is used in Debian-based systems like Ubuntu. Here is a nice chart showing the complete Linux timeline: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg
If you are used to apt-get
, you might find this helpful: http://gfxmonk.net/2012/08/12/pkcon-the-cross-distro-package-manager-cli.html
It contains typical apt-get
requests translated to the pkcon
universe. :)
nice i am new to the pkcon -verse ,
i secretly was wishing they could all be interchangeably be used on sailfish though -

https://together.jolla.com/question/138542/failed-to-install-an-openrepos-repo/
Since then I've stuck to pkcon.
