Since it was announced I never heard of it again. Could it be that it ended up being the new HMD (ex Nokia?) or was it never really taking off and is already past?

AFAIK the split didn't go through, and it still is one Jolla. Might be in one of their blogs.

From HMDglobal.com

We believe that technology can enhance and improve the lives of billions of people around the world. In 2017 we will enter the global smartphone market with the next generation of Nokia phones running Android.

Community ports may be possible, though.

They might try SFOS at some point; at least it might be possible to port SFOS on one of their phones :)

@vattuvarg i didn't understand what you means with your reference. it speak about HMDglobal, nokia branding phones and android.
Do you means that the hmd has clearly no interest on sfos and jolla?

This is too good of a chance to let it pass by.

Jolla HW? Ill tell you my side of the story.

[RANT]

I was in line @ Narikkatori in 20and...12 (who cares), and I was honestly excited, and happy, and - yes, cold - until on the plaza screen the beautiful sailfish OS logo (sorry V1.0 just beats v2.0) pop up; with BETA appended to it. That's when I knew it was going to go south. Really. It was that simple. I didn't even SEE the phone, nor did I use it, I knew already deep down it would not have been what it was hailed for (and I chose these words wisely).

Jolla is a Software company? The software was not ready for the market on the day of release. No wonder the HW didnt sell. All the FOSS talks, the "its for nerdies only", "its not for an average joe", that's BS. Get over it. The reality is that they pokered on an early release (for whatever reasons the Board probably knows), and lost.

[/RANT].

The fact the HW part took the blame for this makes this whole story just more sad (bad engish intended to highlight the sadness in it).
Next to the SW, the only other innovative idea (IMO) was the OTH. And we know how far that has (not) flown.

Thanks for your attention.

PS : I am still a jolla user, and my (initial) disappointment has diminshed over time, although its not gone yet. I hereby challenge to prove me wrong, Jolla!

So I think I got my question answered, didn't expect so many comments to tell the truth.

The two most informative posts for answering were

@Fuzzillogic AFAIK the split didn't go through, and it still is one Jolla. Might be in one of their blogs.

and

@avhakola Afaik they backed off from the split when the Jolla Tablet thing went down and they decided to focus on software and drop the hardware manufacturing side completely.

I would say we can close the question....
