I always see people asking for feature already present in android or other mobile OSes. My friends ask me about exclusive feature which sailfish have or others borrowed from sailfish. All i have to say about is UI.

Do add such features in answers. We may not aware of good features. We can update ourselves.

  1. It really multitasks (so you can really run more than one app at a time).
  2. You can really close applications without going all the way to Settings->Apps.
  3. You can switch between applications in a quick way.
  4. You have a real UNIX command line to interact with the system.
  5. You can rotate the device disabling auto screen rotation by simply keeping a finger on the screen (e. g. to see a picture sideways).
  6. You have updates every couple of months for all devices, while Android devices have maybe one update in all their life.
  7. You have an official community where you can ask for help.
  8. The OS makers are in the community and really listen to what you are saying, and possibly reply to you.
  9. It runs native apps and not f*ing sluggish Java apps.

Especially the number 5.) is something that is quite unique in today's mobile devices! (It used to be possible in Nokia Maemo/Meego products, though)

What this means is that it is really easy to develop SW on the device itself; You can install compiler tools and build just about anything ever released as s SW tarball... Actually you have git in the device so you can sync a repository from github and build the package directly!

There is nothing that compares to that!

Then I recommend watching the Sailfish OS Tips and Tricks Webinar. You'll maybe learn other cool tricks!

Uhm.. Be aware of point 4).. It's not user-friendly and not for the common user.. It's not a feature and not better.. It's something for who wants to go deeper..

@palikao Nobody forces you to use it. It's not even available unless you select developer mode.

  1. You are not part of a big, dark ecosystem -> Big Data
  2. You are part of a big open source system -> including a active community
  3. You have more control over your phone -> you can be "root"
  4. You can use a good development environment -> try SDK and make your own app
  5. You have fantastic natives apps -> in store, in openrepos

and so on..

The big dark ecosystem comes from Google services and apps, it is not caused by Android as OS, if I understand correctly. How long SF OS will remain trustable and "clean" is questionable. How will the first Russian device's SF OS version look like? As long as there are no strong privacy protection options (app permissions) integral part of the OS and the removal is forbidden as part of the licence conditions, the future of SF OS as trustworthy OS is unclear.

Stefanix ( 2017-01-05 10:54:02 +0300 )edit

@Stefanix: the Google 'services' and applications have become a necessary part of Android, see this article from three years ago (the situation has only gotten worse): http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/10/googles-iron-grip-on-android-controlling-open-source-by-any-means-necessary/

nthn ( 2017-01-06 14:03:58 +0300 )edit

@nthn: Well, it's possible to use Android without these services. The result are limitations, many apps are not usable. What I want to say is that Android is not bad from a technical point of view. The problem is Google's tight grip on it. Can we get into a similar situation with SF OS? What will make licensees out of it?

Stefanix ( 2017-01-06 14:17:45 +0300 )edit

3 and 5 together combine for some serious awesomeness like the ISOdrive app in OpenRepos that allows you to boot a computer from a Linux hybrid ISO in your Download folder. I understand you'd need to jailbreak an Android before you can use that platform's implementations for that.

Please keep in mind that libhyris leverages on android drivers.

After one year of using JP1 I'll post mine observed HOT's and NOT's

HOT:

1) Diferrent from the grey mass - nobody has such device

2) Big Brother is not watching You. AFAIK Jolla team promised not to sale owner's private data

3) Low resource usage - SFOS are running smoothly even on JP1 (when it saw the daylight? uhhmmm, no idea, but software is still update)

4) Ideal choice for NIX enthusiast and previous Nokia N 9/950 user

5)User communuty (IMHO it is a bit messy... requesting make it as forum, where all info are sorted by topics)

NOT:

1) Not enough native apps (pushed out by perennial Alien Dalvik), and even native apps has low functions

2) Poor or even no availabality of devices with SFOS (custom ROM for Android devices doesn't count, and this is a MAJOR CON)

3) No WPS support for WLAN

4) Hard to MOD... (Boosting headset volume by editing some system files not working properly)

3) WPS is a quite insecure protocol, so it's a good thing when a WLAN implementation doesn't offer it.

simosagi ( 2017-01-06 00:49:15 +0300 )edit

H5 there is and always was talk.maemo.org while not officially advertised as Jolla's Forum, it is a place to go for any Maemo/Mer derived system! N3 if at all wpa2enterprise is still missing, as simo said WPS is the dragons! N4 highly subjective, there are limits such as powerout of the chipset and that is limited till it destorts physically - it is actually H6 good to mod as you can alter anything to your liking (with some knowledge and in limits of the hardware)

A comparison is available here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_mobile_operating_systems (from what I see, BBOS10 was one of the most complete mobile OS, far ahead others).

Additional to above member comments, SailfishOS:

  1. The first and single commercial OS who make use of Wayland. Wayland add a level of security not achievable in Android or X.

  2. Uses free and open-source graphics device drivers

  3. SDK for Windows, Mac and Linux

Now, if Jolla do not come, very fast, with a top notch device they will loose developer interest and community members. SailfishOS will become another historical great OS, along BBOS, Symbian, BeOS, Syllable, Plan9, AmigaOS, PalmOS etc...

How does Wayland improve security with respect to Android, if I may ask?
