As i have seen in couple of videos, when one exits apps by sliding to right, app minimizes to a live tile on home screen ..ie.if you are playing a video( as in link) as soon as app is minimized , the video keeps on playing & we can see a live tile on home screen..

however in intex aqua fish/jolla c on minimizing the tile freezes ! i have tried this for both sailfish & android apps & none of them are supporting live tiles..

link -https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GTA2a5pOlFc

it would be a great feature if on minimizing app its still active as a live tile on homescreen

edit 1- i got to know this feature exist in early versions of sfos so ill add this in feature request

edit 2- i noticed that if you start any app & swipe to left/right while it is opening as a tile on homescreen , the live tile feature works ..but as soon as you open some other app the tile freezes !

edit 3- for few apps like native browser, ytplayer & few sailfish apps are capable of live multitasking..ie while watching video on native browser , on minimizing the app ,video keeps playing on live tile ..

so if this feature is extended to android apps , then it would be great !

so if this feature is extended to android apps , then it would be great ! it would be great to loose your battery in couple of hours?

Battery consumption is always a concern but live multitasking will make doing things much more easier in fact ..ie.if live multitasking is supported i can check my whatsapp while typing this comment !

but since its not so i have to switch between apps making job tedious !.

or lets take another example .. im in conversation with 2 people - one on whatsapp & other on fb messenger , if i have live multitasking , i can keep track of both converdations rather than switching btw apps more frequently !

i hope you get the point @coderus

Maybe I don't understand your question correctly ("a stagnant screen" - what does it look like), but there's an option that defines how SFOS reacts when you swipe to the right. It will either show the live tiles (same as when you swipe to the left; it's called the home screen) or the notification feed (new mails, clock, weather,...). Most people prefer the latter.

OK, I think I understand now. We should maybe define "live tile". SFOS offers the possibility for an app to expose live content on the tile. Some do in a useful way, some don't. Android apps can never use this feature because they don't know about it. SFOS will only show a screenshot of the app in this case. Native apps on the other hand behave as defined by the author. YTplayer for example will even allow you to continue watching the video on this little tile. There's one exception to all of this: In low memory conditions, SFOS kills apps that run in the background and are normally "active tiles". In this case they appear slightly dimmed. When you tap on them, the app is re-started.

So what you should try is to use an app like YTplayer and see if it works as expected as long as there's enough memory.

Yes but in demo video of jolla phone, they show multiple apps with live tiles ..for ex. Video player, gallery, so on..

@taran could you give a link to the video you mean, so we know what you mean? if the video is longer give us the minute/second mark too

Now that I understood what it is you're talking about, there's two things to take into consideration before you decide if you really want this feature:

As coderus suggested, it eats up battery. Having each minimized app update its tile continuously is probably an overkill and do more damage than it helps.

The other thing is that only sone apps present content that works well in this small form factor. In many cases, it's more useful to change to a specialized view adapted for this small tile. The stock media app for example would be pretty useless as a minimized version with all its lists and many controls. Instead, it's stripped down to something you can really use even as a small tile.

So this is what Sailfish offers: A stage for the author of the app that is all set to make his content shine even on a small tile. Sometimes all it needs is a smaller versof the original app. Usually though, only a carefully designed new UI will do the job. (There are great examples.) Sailfish cannot make this decision, the author of the app needs to do this.

I would like an per-app option for android apps to keep them running minimized on the home screen, e.g. to simply render them smaller. This would be useful for HERE WeGo for example while driving and provide easy access other apps like media player, phone etc (of course it should only be used during a stop at a traffic light for example)

Exactly .. Even for whatsapp & messenger this option will be very useful so one need not switch btw apps so frequently

taran ( 2017-01-11 03:58:57 +0300 )edit

regarding power consumption, they can also be an option to do it only if a charger is connected (as typically in a car)

If I understood your question, this patch should restore that behavior: https://openrepos.net/content/cornerman/patch-dont-freeze-app-peek
