Just like the Turing Phone, i am running out of system space on the Intex Aquafish phone.

Jolla , Jolla C and Jolla Tablet users dont have that issue but for whatever crazy reason Jolla has decided that for all its licensed phome hardware suppliers 2.5GB memory would be enough of a partition of the system. To the contrary! Under 4GB i would never ever go if i was Jolla. Three Storage Partitions Devices low memory

Of course once i drop below 500MB which i will, same happened on my Turing Phone i cannot update the SFOS anymore. Running out of memory sucks and my Intex Aquafish has a 128GB SDcard running just fine in it.

The Jolla C has the same amount of system data memory.

How about https://together.jolla.com/question/40802/how-to-format-your-usd-card-to-share-space-with-android/ ? Besides, what on / should grow 500MB and have you stuck? The guide can be used for most things aliendalvik if you want to get rid off the vast amount of garbage...

@chemist quick question what will that setup do to the following: 1. ability to backup to external SD function? 2. ability to save images to external SD card function? 3. existing symbolic links to external SD card and directories.

Also the above is a lack of system partition memory for sailfish and i am not sure how your SD mounting scheme would solve that. I am not necessarily interested in making Android detect my external SD card, just Sailfish OS.

Actually

  1. nothing (it might get written to .android though, but that is still on the sdcard)
  2. nothing
  3. nothing

Android already knows about the sdcard...

My intention in linking you to the how-to was to give you a straight fwd example of what you may do. I will not tinker with the system's partition unless I actually run into a problem of not enough space. And doubt that will happen any time soon. Just a piece of advice, if you have no knowledge of what is needed, don't touch the system!
