In series of tweets https://mobile.twitter.com/jollahq a new community device is hinted at. Could it be revealed at the Barcelona Mobile World Conference at the end of this month?

Did you read https://blog.jolla.com/watch/ last paragraph?

Sigh... The only thing more useless than tablet is a watch! :/

@Kollin If that "watch" is a smartwatch, in real sense, with some nice sensors, than it may open interest to many people.

  • Barometric pressure sensor.
  • Ambient temperature sensor.
  • Heart rate monitor.
  • Oxymetry sensor.
  • Skin conductance sensor.
  • Skin temperature sensor.
  • Glucose monitor ?

Jolla has stopped to give false hopes with the word "soon", it's better like that and I don't think the community should start doing that :/

As for the update, since their only product is Sailfish OS, yeah they work on it x). Some info about the content of the update here if you want.

@tvicol wearables are more or less dead(ish). Noone cares. The smartphone became successful because it solved problems for a big percentage of the population. The wearable is a niche product for a gadget loving minority.

Guys, how about you calm down, it is about more community devices not new eg. JollaCs

On the contrary. It definitely reads "new Sailfish devices for our community" in the blog article. Either way, it is not more specific than promising more information in the near future. :) So I am calm - calm as can be.

Twitter is about "more" devices and that is what this thread is about. But sure, Jolla's business is to make SFOS so there be new community devices like the blog says but that is 2 months old today.

@chemist I interpreted "more" to mean two new community devices JollaD and Jolla Watch. I speculate JollaD is going to be released at MWC in about month. Yes!!!

what is the definition of community device vs casual device?
What experience should it bring more (or less)?

cemoi71 ( 2017-02-02 18:20:21 +0300 )edit

More as in more JollaCs and the watch was an Urban-Port not a new device, sorry. Lets wait those couple of weeks, maybe Jolla found someone willing to put SFOS on their android hardware (hope dies last) @cemoi71 it comes with no warranty and priority access to developer events (or something like that, JollaC is just the Aquafish with a different modem and some random hardware replacements like another ear-speaker).

@chemist many thanks for answering.
I just ask for it, so that people could realize what it should really means under community devices.
After a while, sometimes i have the feeling that some people not really check what it means.
Would it be for example a replacement of the JP1, because not for a dedicated creator, but reflects the philosophy of jolla, like the google-phone line does for google.
There is a kind of wrong amalgam if you see what i mean...

@Kollin: you can pry my Pebble smartwatch from my cold, dead fingers. Err, my cold, dead wrist. (Granted, it's the always-on display feature of the Pebble which makes it a great)

If we are 50.000 to 75.000 Jolla fans, at least, we should have equal chances to order and buy the proposed community devices. Please give us enough time to choose and order. This should be selfclear for proposing company - Jolla Oy. Looking forward to have SFOS based smart watch, too. Best wishes! ☺☺☺

well but pebble was recently sold to fitbit (i think-some wearable company).

OK, let me count one plus one together:

  • We know that Jolla has something to announce regarding a new SFOS offering. And we all agree that Jolla certainly will wait until the WMC2017 to do so to get the most attention.

  • Circular Devices have announced release of their PuzzlePhone Q2-2017. That is April, May or June. Why wouldn't they present their prototype to the world at the WMC2017 as well.

= My best guess is that Jolla and Circular Devices may happily announce that the PuzzlePhone will come with the option of a fully licensed SFOS brain. At least I vvery much hope so!

@hubat Oh please be true. But anyway if there is a new community device, then I'd say give preference to Tablet backers for the device, in lieu of refund, I'd be happy to pay any difference required. Please make it world available, not just europe please please please.

So shout up and taky my money ;-)

Please concentrate the company resources (!= personal) on a good phone, not a smart-watch, tablet or anything else. SailfishOS cannot even connect via BluetoothLE to any of the "newer" devices and the source is still not released, so I would start with the basics. Despite that equals chances hits the nail!

since it is a software company only nowadays- lets say a good phone experience.

kaktux ( 2017-02-03 16:33:04 +0300 )edit

id say buy the Intex Aquafish and program for that phone since its the only production device. all other phones are out of production and while they should be supported if you cant own one it makes it more difficult to test the device for compatibility.

Please not just 1000 devices and not for just 2 days to be ordered...

Produce a big amount and make it available for as many people as possible the JP1s are slowly dying and we need a new device as default.
3 GB Ram device with dual sim, sd card and full LTE support also in Europe (basically an improved Jolla C) and a better display & cam than the JP1 would be already good enough as substitution

I assume these won't be brand new devices, but just more of Jolla C?

Today was the community round table at FOSDEM with live broadcast on youtube. Very interesting one! At the end Veskuh sneaked a little that we have to expect something at MWC 2017, which is indeed in about three weeks from now. Expect Sailfish OS to be able to do more is some word I remember and something about Jolla C+ or similar. But nothing very clear right now. To sailfishs capabilities he said not only app wise :) so fingers crossed for new hardware and a big update after MWC ;)

Update: here is the link

I missed this - timezone error on my part - so just watched it using the email link. Very interesting. Is there a transcript? I'd mainly like to know who's talking.

It'd be great if someone could edit the video and add a name when someone first speaks.

DaveRo ( 2017-02-06 13:50:34 +0300 )edit

I think most people were introduced during the broadcast bit can't help with that. Transcriot is not available as far as I know...

drummer12 ( 2017-02-07 01:53:42 +0300 )edit

@drummer12 I skipped the first few minutes while people were settling down, but the speakers from the audience were not introduced. I suspect everybody there knew them: the guy who rebuilt mer with Qt5, the guy who talked too quietly and was asked on IRC to speak up, the guy who talked about the droid app - even the guy who sits in front of the camera who I think spoke but I wasn't sure '. Not vital, but I'd like to put nicks to these folk.

My own fault - I'll try to get the time right in future! When I tuned in - too late - there was a chat feed on the screen. Maybe someone was typing names there.
