How was Jolla 1 created?
I would like to hear a story of Jolla 1 (phone) creation. Sort of a postmortem.
How the phone was designed, who took part, who were the hardware designers and were they working at Jolla or was the design outsourced. Is Jolla's phone a unique design or an adaptation of Qualcomm's reference phone design. How much did the hardware development cost.
How was the OEM manufacturer found and what happened after the phones had been manufactured (we know the manufacturer didn't continue making Jolla phones).
What are the difficulties (technical, cost issues) in, for example, updating the phone's design with modern hardware (higher res screen, better camera, new SOC) and manufacturing a new batch. Taking CAD files of the Jolla 1 and updating them. What would be the price of this redesign and how does it compare to the design of the brand new phone.
Maybe some or all of these questions have been answered before on IRC or elsewhere. Or people who could answer them are no longer working at Jolla. Or some of these questions can't be answered because of the NDA. Anyway, I would love to know more of the phone's story.

How about creating a wiki post as an answer here and let the community collect and add all information chronological?! :)

Hopefully, some of the people from Jolla (or formerly from Jolla) will find some time to participate too.

In this blog post, @stezz talks about the challenges Jolla faced before releasing the phone, in 2013:
- A journey of a year (more or less)

Maybe they should have quit after jolla 1. Back then they had 10000+ supporters. Now it's a few 100 fanboys, me follow the refund process since 3 years ago, a few average joes following the none existing moves.
Dave999 ( 2017-03-10 18:41:37 +0200 )editI would assume the JollaPhone was pretty close to the reference by Qualcomm because Jolla had to push back the release about 6 months and rush a new design since the manufacturing of the original NovaThor-chipset was discontinued only few months before the original release date (NovaThor was joint operation between Ericsson and STMicroelectronics and after the split Ericsson was left with modem parts of NovaThor and STMicroelectornics with pretty much the rest). Afaik the huge battery usage of JollaPhones in the early days was because of this change (SFOS wasn't that well optimized for Qualcomm's SoC's at the time), but we gained the Android support on the change (iirc there weren't any talks about Android support until the fall of 2013). It would still be nice to know how the original design would compared to the one we had.
