Opening this as suggested by @fmotl at https://together.jolla.com/question/158226/sfos-remote-manager/ where we were discussing about posibilities of SFOS remote manager (https://twitter.com/AllBoutJolla/status/838699143744880640) for average user. Please go to the original thread for brand new usage ideas for this possible upcoming Remote manager and let's focus on these safety features (or ideas closely connected to them) here.

I would like to see the remote manager or at least parts of it available to everyone and not just B2B-customers since with it Jolla could add posibility for remotely locking and/or wiping the phones memory if you lost your phone. These could be activated through the http://account.jolla.com/ -site for devices registered and logged in with Jolla account. Just locking down the phone would be a good start, but adding remote (and complete) memory wipe (with locking phone at the same time of course) would add huge value to this safety feature and to the whole SFOS ecosystem.

Do you see any problems (and hopefully we can come up with solution to those) or have ideas how to improve this kind of feature in the phones running SFOS?

I see the benefits of being able to wipe the device remotely. However at the same time I'm a little bit concerned about possible security problems (which likely will exist if you open remote access). What if someone will compromise Jolla's servers or find a way to remotely trigger the wipe another way? A possible way could be that the handset shows a notification and the wipe could be stopped in a given time by entering a password/security code.

If man creates system, man can break it also. Of course this has to be well thought to limit the chances of misuse. You could add that remorse timer to cancel the wipe or add feature to first lock the phone, back up everything and upload it to the cloud and then wipe the phone so you can at least recover everything if someone finds an exploit.

What about the possibility to send a specific string as sms to the phone that then replies with the GPS coordinates?

@vattuvarg that is also very good suggestion. You could also expand this functionality to lock and wipe so you don't need logged in Jolla-account, just have set this up before hand on your device.

Another possibility is that the phone sends photos from the two cameras at the next unlock.
