Hello,
I have a Jolla 1 phone and am a bit troubled regarding the future of the Aliendalvik on the phone. It is quite old and now my question: will it be updated someday? As far as I see, there will be no Jolla phone in the future with Android support (this Sony collaboration is not ready short-term I think) and I would rather not use a pure Android device. Sailfish lacks many useful apps but I would rather not miss the OS.

Not sure why there are so many upvotes, this question was answered a long time ago here.
It is reappearing every once in a while, and since the phone approaches its fourth birthday, I don't see why the answer would change. It's better for everybody if they focus on the Xperia port, which will have Dalvik 4.4.
I'm 100% sure it's because now eveyone sees jollaC-aliendalvik security-patched and jolla1 not + more apps demanding at least kitkat.
And the answer is not 'no.' but technically backport of jollaC-aliendalvik doable but jolla doesn't want to start crowdfunding for whatever reason

So... you are precisely confirming that the answer is 'no', why this downvote? :) I know that you don't like it and you are fighting to change that, but this is the actual answer to @Jens2017 question, sorry. As for why, it's obviously a lack of resources, and when I see e.g. that even M$, with all its cash, gave WP8.1 only 8 months of support, I can't be too mad at Jolla.
@Shmet it's already outdated actually, the future seems to be Anbox.

The question is very good and correct! People who have a Jolla 1 smartphone are much more, and therefore the need for the current Alien Dalvik on this device is higher! So I would also like to get an accessible answer to this question! Although, if there were a lot of real applications, this problem would not be included in the agenda for most users. Do not "kill" Jolla 1! This device looks great and works great!
devel-su ( 2017-08-22 12:26:40 +0300 )editThe limitation of using Alien Dalvik on J1 is not only the outdated Android version (4.1), but the amount of RAM: only 1 GB. This was the main reason for me to switch to an Aqua Fish: no more reboots, no more killed apps.
The Android version on J1 was never a problem for me because all apps I used were compatible. But that depends on the kind of apps you use...

leszek ( 2017-08-22 13:43:06 +0300 )editI actually do not like Alien Dalvik. It is mandatory to some of us just because SailfishOS does not have notable market share. We can only hope that operating system will start spreading through late developments: Russian and Chinese manufacturers who will bring SailfishOS enabled phones to market. If some of them will be widely available, third party will take note and start offering their mobile applications to SailfishOS as well.
So far to me it seems that SailfishOS has been able to avoid great fragmentation problem which Android has. Keeping old devices up to date is one (very good IMHO) way to manage this problem. less fragmentation makes developing applications easier, no need to be able to support multitude of versions or try to keep with one version using only features common to all versions of the operating system.
Might be that the success in this is only due to small amount of official devices. I would ditch Alien Dalvik immediately if I could get applications in native format.
