Purism Librem 5 phone [off-topic]

Purism is running a kickstarter for a free privacy-oriented smartphone running Linux. The cost for a crowdfunded device (to be delivered in 2019, assuming they don't pull a Jolla tablet) is $599 + shipping and customs from US.

How does the presence of this new competitor impact Jolla? Do you think it will take users away from the Sailfish/Jolla platform? Do you yourself plan to back the project?

None of my Colleges and friends cares about privacy and or has problems with Google or Facebook So this market is so small. So to anwer your question: Nö and no

I think the only reasonable comment for now is this: SailfishOS does exist. Librem does not (yet). So, wait and (perhaps) see.

Librem is open for ideas and operating systems. If Jolla wants to expand SailfishOS coverage opening up the last bits of Silica could be very interesting for cooperation. Otherwise I am sure Plasma Mobile will be considered. I doubt puri.sm is capable of pulling it off with a gnome mobile edition

As much as I'd like to believe it, I just don't think you could slap Debian onto a phone and call it a day. Hardware killswitches seem like a clever idea though.

Plasma mobile is a great idea, but I have the impression they have no operating concept. In the videos on youtube it looks like they just shrunk some desktop applications und moved some buttons around. That is nothing I would want to use, even Mer/Nemo has a better UI.

As far now, the purism support LibeOS, KDE and now Ubuntu Touch. I would like to see as well SailfishOS. I like at the phone the hardware button for wifi, mic, cam etc.

for me every addition makes it less believable from a project managment point of view. i would have liked a.plasma-mobile phone. but adding others all the time seems more like creating a wider base of possible customers than anything else. they should focus of delivering one working product and expand after that. we will see.

Yeah see this probably isn't going to be a product as such, more a create your own phone kit (assembly required)

I would reformulate it a bit:

"Purism is aiming to support LibeOS, KDE and now Ubuntu Touch on it's hardware, if it ever ships to people in some form."

It might happen the hardware might not ever ship and the given software release will not be available in the end, or not in usable form or deprecated.

I would hope making a good community port of Sailfish with 100% hardware integration might be a nice idea.

I'm using the Librem 13 laptop an really like it. The hardware is well made, PureOS an very up-to-date fork of Debian. The Purism team is responsive to feedback and issues, although the company has only under 20 employed people. As soon as Librem 5 will be available I definitively will ditch Sailfish for it. I'm really happy that it is around as an alternative to Android & iOS and have been using it for years now.

But. I'm waiting also for years now for such a simple feature as the possibility to change the standard search engine to something else than Google. I mean, please. The Mail client is a total pain. Especially with HTML mails it's so unbearably slow, it's almost unusable. The dialler app is a pain as well. Essential information about calls is missing in the calling list. No out-of-the-box support for eduroam. The USB-MTP works now and then, not reliable at all. I could go on here, but you probably get the point. These features have been requested YEARS ago. I don't see much momentum here and will give Librem definitely a try. I'm so frustrated with Sailfish by now (and I'm a loyal user for years and 4 devices in use) that I'm actually considering to use a Lineage OS-device in the meantime.

i think one big reason that i wont siwitch for whatever the librem 5 will run by default(i know its called pure os but we don't know what that IS yet so that says nothing) is that it will probably have about as crappy a navigation scheme as the rest of the market. i feel about the sailfish navigation scheme kind of like i feel about trackpoints: most people probably dont care, some may even dislike it but i will never buy any device of that class without it again.

we do know a lot about PureOS:

  • Debian based
  • Gnome/GTK
  • UI of existing applications adapted for mobile use
