Hello,

so what's the current status for the important messenger apps becoming native? I think of especially WhatsApp and Telegram. Using Android apps are nice, I would however also like to have them native at some point. At the beginnings of Sailfish, there were running apps afair, but now I cannot find working ones.

The licensing of such apps is cost prohibitive for Jolla. The apps you 'recall' were basically shut down for not using official API, so users/numbers were getting banned/blocked by Whatsapp (Mitakuuluu).

Bearing in mind that Whatsapp is now owned by Facebook - so don't expect to see native SFOS apps from either of these brands, as it's simply unaffordable to license - at least this is what I understand the situation to be, if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me!, hence I leave this here as a comment, not an answer.

However, there is Sailbook (sfos unofficial facebook) on Openrepos; https://openrepos.net/content/sailbook/sailbook

Licensing is not a problem for Telegram tough its still abandoned. There is a working version of sailorgram available over openrepos, but without active development. If you are interested, search for the telegram thread here.

Support for RCS-Services (as mentioned in other threads) would be a necessary thing. Its a mobile provider standard, not bound to other companies and nevertheless the protocol following the old SMS service. Newer android os versions have native support (including the video calls), Windows 10 Mobile as well (but without support for video calls), iOS has Apps. It would really be nice to see RCS-Services built in Sailsfish OS!

That is pretty sad since the absolute minimum for an OS should include the basic messenger apps. You should be able to keep in touch with those apps that most people use. The android apps work for now at least.
