IPv6 & IPv4 DNS server configuration [answered]

asked 2017-09-23 15:38:42 +0300

My provider announced that they will show personalised ads on their television platform based on the Internet usage and shopping cards across Belgium. I already refused to give my data to my ISP but I want to go a step further by configuring all my systems to avoid their DNS servers (They also block several websites, ... by DNS).

Now I wanted to configure my Jolla devices but it seems they only accept IPv4 as input. I found this topic about this issue: https://together.jolla.com/question/45664/ipv6-addresses-cannot-be-manually-configured-through-the-ui/

However my provider uses IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time... Is it possible to disable IPv6 or set the DNS servers somewhere for IPv6?

It possible that people flag this as a duplicate but I have the option to choose, the other person only has IPv6.

Well as DNS has no authentification etc, they could just redirect any DNS request to their DNS server. If you really want to be safe in this regard I see only two options:

  1. Change ISP
  2. Use VPN

Regarding your question: wouldn't it be easier to set a fixed DNS in your router? If that's not possible, maybe you want to consider buying a rasPi or so (carambola is good for that) that you plug between your router and the devices that connect to the router.

@Dylan Van Assche thats what i have been doing, with Secure Fishnet, all DNS requests are routed through the VPN server instead, none can be routed through the ISP I believe, so all websites unlock.

I already use ProtonVPN but in some cases websites are blocked due the VPN (Netflix is the perfect example). Then I need a fail back. The router is an ISP modem/router. Maybe I can set the DNS servers, will take a look tomorrow. But this isn't a solution for mobile internet.

Did you try this for disabling IPV6 and/or setting the DNS server via /etc/resolv.conf ?
