edit: a community wiki to flash with Linux until the official method is announced.

I am posting this as a wiki to create a place to answer and possibly debunk the threaded rumors. I want to confront the speculation and work from what is known. I know a lot of comments are out of context and overtly speculative, at best.

The posting Sailfish X: new flashing tool and new sales start day mentions "a new way" to flash via Windows. Is this in addition to the methods outline on how to build Sailfish X and flash via linux?

In both explanations the Linux method that many of us are already familiar with, will remain supported, but unofficially since there is a relationship with the Sony developers which use Emma to distribute some of the blobs. I recommend people to read both to get a clear understanding.

Why doesnt Jolla just build an Android app that could be installed on Xperia X allows purchase and download of SFOS X and the unlocking of the Sony Phone Bootloader as well as flashing straight from within Android, it could just create a second partition amd toss Android upon creation of new boot volume.

Jolla blog suggests Windows method in addition and for completeness, the current flashing method with Linux does not build Sailfish OS, it will come prebuilt in a binary image.

To quote James answer in the comments to the blog post:

I will however say that the Emma tool is now officially a requirement for everyone in order to flash their devices. Xperia X is supported by that tool, more on that later. So for further clarification (and maybe to repeat myself), the current official requirement from Sony is that everyone should use Emma tool in order to flash their devices.

So it seems that Jolla is obliged by Sony to officially only offer the flashing via the windows-only Emma tool. However, there are speculations that flashing via Linux will still be possible, though inofficial. But I guess we can't say anything definitive until the images are released.

If I pay 50 € for SailfishX, I want an official support for a linux flashing procedure.

I think windows user are not able to work with terminal. If a linux user hangs on windows, he use a vitrual machine with windows, like me. There Emma tool will work..... Otherwise a realy linux user is able to flash the phone with terminal at once. You can find a part of flashing with backup the DRM keys here....

@phklrz Jolla only provides the image. Flashing tools are the hardware vendor's responsibility.

I understand your disappointment and I'm sure so do Jolla. I'd prefer a way to flash SFOS X images from my Linux pc as well, but the way James described it, Jolla has no choice but go this path. I'm sure, Jolla would be happy to provide as much possibilities as possible for as much operation systems as possible to flash the images. But if they ignore Sonys "request" (they are the ones to blame for this) now, it would make future cooperation somewhere between very difficult to impossible.

We'll have to wait a see if there will be an "inofficial" way for linux flashing (over all, this is the way the community builds are flashed right now).
