As far as I recall, the "show homescreen before opening app" was introduced along the way to make it clear that open applications have their visual representations on the homescreen. It's always like this. Open an app from the app grid, from the Jolla Store, click on a link inside an email to open your browser... Sailfish always shows the homescreen (and the position of the new app on the homescreen) first.
In my opinion it's a very intuitive and clever concept. Also, it wisely uses the time it takes to launch the app in question. The alternative would probably be a splash screen.
