Since update to 2.1.2.3 there is a new issue with repeated notifications from Android.

For the Android store a notification loop occurs as long as a download is active. For the German app "biltzer.de" a notification gets visible always when app is in background.

Since Sailfish update, these messages pop in an endless loop as soon as the app is not in front. I tried to restart the app and also JollaC, but the bad behaviour is reproducible. When another android app is in front, it is unusable because it stucks everytime the message was shown again. The message loop is even going when app is closed from launcher, and was in background before!

Anybody else recognized this behaviour, maybe with another app?

EDIT 2017 Oct 24: Same notification spamming when downloading aptoide updates in background. =>It is a general bug in alien dalvik notifications since last update!

EDIT 2017 Nov 03: Bug still exists in 2.1.3.7

EDIT 2018 Feb 27: Bug still exists in 2.1.4.13 EA! And also on SailfishX!

EDIT 2018 Jun 05: Bug still exists in 2.2.0.29 EA! JollaC as well as SailfishX
See video showing the behaviour for "Blitzer.de" App

Yep I get that too, it just starts spamming the screen which is rather annoying!

I have a similar issue with telegram. Before the update I received a notification with the first message, and the others were "silent". Now I receive a notification with every message, and this is quite annoying when you are subscribed to groups.

here (XperiaX 2.1.3.5) it happens with the "you need to update google play service "-notification on eBay-Kleinanzeigen and BlaBlaCar

This issue should vanish or at least be mitigated when update 2.2.0 (the next after 2.1.4) rolls out.

Thanks for tracking it. What does mitigated mean?

@magullo They could not really fix it (e.g. the root cause of the bug is unknown or it can't be easily fixed without breaking other parts of the system), so they made changes which should prevent the bug from happening (e.g. how notifications are handled).

thx for the heads up!

The fix will be for all devices or only for Xperia? Because all last aliendalvik related updates that I saw, was Xperia-only.

We have taken an attempt to limit the excessive notifications from Android apps appearing in OS update 2.2.0.29. The patch was implemented on Sailfish side, so it should help in all Sailfish devices. It seems that the patch is effective in case of Whatsapp, for instance. We have a plan of a further change, should it be needed.
- If you keep seeing this issue with 2.2.0.29, please report. A video clip showing the unwanted bahaviour would be helpful. Also the names of the Android apps involved would be necessary.

I've had this occure with Discord. After saving a picture to gallery the download finished notification kept spamming infinately.

Today I decided to try out I2p for android but it is unusable because it constantly spamms bandwitdh notifications.

We need a way to turn off notifications for specific android apps (is there a way to do this now? A blacklist perfaps? I tried searching but all I could find was a whitelist of similar sort under lipstick).

Please provide a way to disable android notification pop-ups for a specific app in jolla settings, perhaps under "android support".

By the way, I'm not on the latest update (2.1.2.3 Jolla C).

This option is maybe needed for some apps, but it is not my intend for opening this topic. The spamming with repeated identical messages starts with update to 2.1.2.3. It was not there bevore with the same app in same version. The newly introduced bug should be fixed as fast as possible!

I don't think this is a bug, rather a bug fix!

Before SailfishOS 2.1.2 only the first notification was displayed on-screen, when an Android app emits a sequence of notifications (i.e. in contrast to a single one). This was quite unfortunate, as often relevant information was not visible due to this behaviour.

Since SailfishOS 2.1.2 one is finally able to see all notifications emitted by Android apps, which is extremely useful.
E.g. now the F-Droid client app does not appear to be "dead for many minutes" anymore during a manually triggered scan for updates (as one can now observe what it is doing), similarly ApkTrack (though in a shorter timeframe) etc.

So IMO notifications are now displayed as intended by the Android app developers. If there are too many for you, try disabling them in the specific app or consider to file an issue report for this app.

P.S.: Note that the position and duration of the on-screen notifications can be nicely configured with Ingvix's Patch Improved notification preview.

There is no notification spamming with this apps on android devices! Maybe because notifications are shown not as popups. With actual behaviour some apps are nearly unusable! Definitely Jolla has to fix something!

Maybe a switch to show popups ore only message on lookscreen per android app would fix it!

SaimenSays ( 2017-11-09 18:54:18 +0300 )edit

@SamienSays, there is exactly the same "notification spamming with this apps on android devices", the only difference is that "notifications are shown not as popups", just as you stated. ;)

"[...] emitted by Android apps, which is extremely useful. E.g. now the F-Droid client app does not appear to be "dead for many minutes" [...]"

true. But unfortunately, i use F-Droid only once i a while. But the navigation and speed-camera-warning app nearly every time. :)

olf once you experience the notification spamming yourself i dont think you would consider it a feature. Regardless its different then the ore Sailfish X releases, and needs to be further refined.

Seems like this how Android developers notify of running processes, which is required in Android because they don't have a live multitasking screen (covers) and notifications don't pop up. Maybe jolla could turn this into a feature for sailfish where notfications of this sort show on the cover of the android app instead of as a constant pop up. e.g. the here maps shows the %completed when downloading a map, this should show on the cover, just like how a sailfish app would rqther than through the notifications.

With native CodeReader app, there is an endless notification loop "Screenshot aufgenommen"(Screenshot captured). But I don't know if it happens because of this bug or if there is something wrong with the app?
The notification spaming still goes on when app is closed, I need to restart to get rid of it :/

This issue with CodeReader has nothing to do with the Android notifications under SailfishOS, technically.
