Ok, I have bought the Xperia X and Sailfish OS.

Now the question is if I install Sailfish and realise that I cannot use it as my daily phone, is it easily possibly to reload a custom ROM following the instructions provided by Jolla?

Or should I go and root the device first, and backup the firmware before continuing?

After waiting years for the Nokia successor, I probably should have asked this before now....

Thankyou.

From this it would appear to confirm my suspicions that there would be no problem loading a custom ROM without backing up DRM, etc. The backup would only be needed to restore official Sony firmware (in case of a warranty claim for example).

That's right, or custom roms based on stock, so... You will restore DRM keys and flash stock rom just to let your phone as it was never unlocked

Also this:

The drm-keys unlock some functionality on android but won't be needed at all on Sailfish OS or custom android roms (there are drm-fixed-kernels available for custom roms which restore those features).

In many places (eu afaik so you'll be fine until brexit is done ) they aren't even needed to "restore" warranty since wiping the warranty by unlocking your bootloader is not allowed there.

So unless you're going to sell the phone or you plan on ever running stock rom on it again you don't need to backup your drm-keys (can't hurt though). http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=99703&page=12

Also from the FAQ https://jolla.com/sailfishxinstall/

Q4: Can I restore Android to my Xperia device later on? A4: The Emma tool mentioned above can be used to wipe your device and restore Sony’s stock Android. However, when the bootloader is unlocked, special security keys are permanently removed which cannot be restored by Emma. For the impact of the loss of these keys, please check the Sony website.

there is a way to save DRM keys before unlocking, but you have to do it before unlocking the bootloader first time. Once keys are deleted, they are lost forever.
