How do you know if the bootloader can be unlocked on an Xperia X before you actually have it? I mean, if I order an Xperia X to install Sailfish X on, I want to be sure that it is possible before I buy it. I have seen many answers on how to check this possibility on the actual phone, but haven't seen any explanation on how to sort it out before you order it.

Unfortunately, you can't ensure that with a 100%. You can check the exact model number that you order, e.g. for the black model, 1302-8005 and 1302-9401 are the standard, unlockable ones. However, this does not mean that other models can't be unlocked a well. Also, we experienced some vendors (yes, I'm talking to you, Amazon) sending you other model numbers (refurbished operator ones which can't be unlocked), but in this case you can at least return them by simply refer to the wrong model number.

You can always ask the seller of the device if he can check the bootloader unlock status (e.g. if you order from ebay and co), but bigger retailers probably can't answer you that question. So pay close attention to the model number you order and / or clearly state that you want a device where you can unlock the bootloader, this may make returns easier if you get a "wrong" model.

So basically it's the 1302-xxxx model code that could be the clue. If one can find out this exact model from the seller, it can solve the problem. I noticed there is a thread about these model numbers and their "unlockability":

If you are buying it: Well you can't be 100% sure but you should look for a phone that is Sim Free, meaning it was not locked to a carrier network.

If you have it: Open phone app (the dialler) and type ##7378423## Then select Service info -> Configuration There should be a line saying Bootloader allowed: yes If missing or if saying 'no' , then it is not possible to unlock it and therefore no way to install Sailfish

Apparently my question was not clear enough. If I am about to order a phone (that I don't yet have), how can I check this? What information about the phone should I find out?

You question is actually clear enough, seems some people simply don't read the whole thread before replying.

The code should actually be *#*#7378423#*#*together.jolla.com strips the asterisks away, likely because it thinks they mean to italicise.
