If your new here and want to know more about polling here in Together, see this first: https://together.jolla.com/question/16697/together-howto-polling-in-together/

The idea of this poll is very simple. Which "special" or normal other half would you like to have the most in Jolla if these other half's would be available on shop right now?

There will be 8 different Other Half options available for voting. It could be also called an "unofficial competition" for favourite Other Half.

UPDATE!

The Other Half contest for Other Half Option 8 Contestant has ended and the winner chosen by Marc Dillon (@Marc) is:

@mgbler

with Ambience Light The Other Half idea!

Ambience Light TOH: Integrated fiberglass combined with LED so that the whole TOH or parts of it glow in adjustable colors. Could also be used as WakeUp Light

@mgbler 's Ambience Light TOH idea is also available for voting in this poll as the option number eight!

Thank you for everyone in participating and please remember to vote for your favourite from the current eight different options available.

For general discussion I made a separate answer box "Chatbox" where you can add own comments regarding different other half's found at the bottom of the page.

For this poll to be honest, choose only one option from eight. No cheating!

Thanks.

These options will be wiki posts so no karma is awarded from it.

Now start voting please! What is the other half of your dreams?

Dual-sim card ability maybe for option 8 ? As mentionned here : Dual-Sim

Moved from the voting options: In order to be practical, the physical QWERTY keyboard TOH would most likely also require that the phone can always be operated in landscape mode. Just having a keyboard would not be enough on its own.

how about a more rugged TOH, probably made of hard rubber? At least one with a durable and non-slippery coating.

about full keyboard TOH: this would be nice indeed, but it has to be very compact. The phone isn't the smallest by default design and to my preference a sleek and light overall appearance of the device would outweigh the benefits of a full keyboard.

I would really love the dual-SIM option as well - especially if it was a DSA (Dual SIM Active), meaning that both SIM cards can be active and connected to their respective networks at the same time.

An OH with extra battery and radio capability in order to connect to small RF devices with sensors like temp, humidity, etc. There are a lot of small RF modules with arduino compatibility (i.e. NRF24LE1 NRF24L01+MCU).

The Sensordrone already exists with Android apps for it http://www.sensorcon.com/sensordrone/ it is only missing a CO2 sensor that could be in the other half. A other half that a sensordrone can slip into and act as a kickstand and can be detached might be an answer here or even asking that company to make the sensordrone in a different shape.

Maybe duplicate but it will be very nice to have an OH with a sliding gamepad with both cross and analog sticks. The analog sticks must be two and maybe realized with touchpads (for flatness).

The steam controller shows nicely how well touchpads work for gaming. Could the gameTOH be done without the slide somehow?

I was thinking to the sony xperia play smartphone.

The Moga game pad exists for Android phones http://www.mogaanywhere.com/controllers/propower . A other half that has hinges and flips over on both sides and locks into place that resembles the Moga Game pad for iphone might be possible. I envision something that both serves the purpose of the Moga but also has 2 pockets for your memory cards separating your Android and Steam games and also works with your steambox.

Steampad-like controller will be very nice.

Dirk and Kimmoli are working on a new keyboard other half with switchable keyboard so you can attach a gamepad to it as well. http://www.jollausers.com/2014/09/2nd-revision-of-qwerty-keyboard-otherhalf-demoed/

A very simple The Other Half (TOH) add-on, that is neat if you're clumsy:
An otherwise regular TOH, but with a small loop where you can fasten a lanyard.

(A lanyard with Jolla logos could be included with it.)

As suggested and discussed in here: https://together.jolla.com/question/13475/hardware-provide-hole-for-a-leash

I don't think TOH would be the right mounting point for a lanyard.

Milo ( 2014-01-22 12:56:31 +0300 )edit

@Milo - Thank you for the link!

(Well, you should probably not lanyard-catapult your Jolla, but a lanyard could be just what is needed when you notice that you are on your way to drop it.)

@Amelot says: "The Other Half that I would like to build ? Remember the film the Matrix, the Nokia 8110 ? What if your Jolla opened up like that on both the top and bottom ? There obviously certain issues to work out like does it answer directly, or is there a window so you can screen your calls. Push a button and the sliders open from the the middle and shalck! It seems to me that the mechanics would need to be on the back side to move the covers. To keep it simple just a cover for the lens on the back as well. The other issue I see with this is not to inhibit the use of the swipe from the bottom an top edge. The screen is not at the edge of the top or bottom, regardless this would have to be taken into account in the design. Otherwise when open it would be twice as long as normal, and would also be slightly thicker."

... if we could have a something such as a micro-PCIe interface implemented with pogo-pins (aside the very low bandwidth i2c) into the next version of the jolla smartphone, things could get more interested as we could think of attaching high bandwidth dedicated hardware, such as graphics / camcorder / scopes / chess-engines etc. :-)

Pocket NAS Other Half

An other half with two (or, even better, four) full size SD card slots and RAID support.

NAS boxes are great for sharing files between all the devices in your house or office. The problem is that they are too big to be portable. Having NAS built into your phone means that you can take it anywhere.

SD cards currently range up to 128GB capacity, allowing 384GB from four cards using RAID 5 (or 512GB without RAID).

A great use case would be streaming movies from your phone when you visit a friend's house.

@avhakola A protective casing other half! Great idea! Why don't you make it an answer, so we can vote for it?

For me default OH is slippery too. Every time I use my Jolla in one hand I am afraid that it just may slip.

A Pureview camera module

License Nokia technology or ask Nokia to build a Pureview camera module with 41M pixels, OIS, Xenon flash, etc. Seriously, I want to have a decent camera on my phone, not just an average one like the current one on Jolla's phone. I'm ready to pay for that because I would anyway need to carry a separate camera. With Nokia new focus, they should be happy to sell their advanced technology to other companies.

TOH that reaches over the sides like those snap on platic dropcovers for iPhones and Android phones protecting from shock damage when falling down. Non slippable rubber TOH with extrawide and high sides to cover the whole phone.

(@avhakola, have you seen this, from miniFactory?
(via JollaUser)
- don't know about its shock protection factor, though, but it's a start?)

Yes I have seen it, Nice start, but I would rather want it to be integrated to TOH.
