I've seen different request/issues about configuring/disabling alarm tones and or notifications about birthdays of contacts, but I have the opposite problem: I never receive any notification about birthdays, and I find no way to enable them. Reminders for events I create in my default calendar work as expected.

Most of the birth dates in my address book come from facebook profiles, if that has any relevance.

Not fixed in 1.0.8.19 yet.

EDIT: I did a backup of my contacts. In the created all.vcf file not all birthdays are in there. Some contacts have birthdays defined in the people app, but not all birthdays are present in the written file. Even after deleting and adding the birthday again, it is still not present in the (again) backuped contacts file. I have no facebook/exchange/google contacts sync active/configured.

EDIT: still no alarms/notifications for birthdays with SFOS version 1.1.2.16 Any news on this feature? Will we have a working birthday reminder in SailFishOS 2.0?

  1. What about having notification only (no alarm) on the Events view and the Lockscreen?
  2. Or add checkmark to each contact for activate birthday reminder. Disable it by default to let the user choose for which contact he wants to have reminders for. This will also help with contacts imported from facebook as this is the reason reminders are currently disabled.

What you describe is right. Something is still wrong on my phone though, because a) I have birthdays as dates in my contacts, b) Full day events are correctly created in the calendar for each person, c) Birthday calendar is activated... and still, I don't receive any notification about birthdays.

Original Answer: If I have understood the birthday concept right, they are supposed to be added as date information for each contact and after that they appear in calendars as birthdays.

The person specific date tag creates whole day event, which is not possible to edit via calendar.

In calendar it is worth while to check that birthday calendar s checked/activated otherwise the reminder will not be given. The manage calendars is available in the pulley menu of the calendar. There you can also control the color of the calendars to easily differentiate them in calendar view.

The alarm of the birthday event is bit unclear as there is no place to give time of the alarm. Perhaps there should be dedicated option to give alarm time for birthday event explicitly.

But I remember to receive two alarms for birthday at end of December, when the date and calendars where set as described above.

Update:@Orologiaio Based on your comment I have made my own test since yesterday with this issue and it seems that birthday linked to person doesn't give any alarm just like you described. I have to assume that my two alarms for birthday were caused by the calendar entries on Jolla and Exchange calendars were the alarms are possible to set.

The conclusion on this issue is that either Jolla/SF didn't consider the alarm function for the person driven birthday calendar or the alarm function has been forgotten.

Thanks for confirming this. It is definitely an issue to me, it needs to be solved.

I think I've fallen victim to this too: I added a birthday for one of my contacts through the 'people' app, but I never got a notification or alarm for it. It did show up on the calendar as a whole-day event though.

Thanks for confirming :)

Well, I hope the next update brings a solution.

Pulled dates like from facebook are uneditable, right?! I have an editable entry (People -> Contact -> edit) not causing any alarm/notification - I never had any birthday reminder ever I think (no notifications at all).

I hope this will be fixed soon, I haven't received any notifications from the calendar ever.

Same for me... All birthday entries are coming from the contacts app which where imported from MS Outlook vcf files. Imported birthday entries in a calendar without notification function do not make sense at all and are useless. And of course birthdays are usually added in the contact coming from whichever source. Of course this needs to be fixed ASAP! and no excuse from Jolla can be acceptable.

I had it working after resetting the birthday calendar. Now it is gone again, worked for a few days only (no idea if it is reset by a reboot or calendar crashed...)

this affects me too, normal notifications work like a charm, but i never got notifications for birthday entries even though all the birthdays appear in the calendar.

Personally, my device is connected to my M$oft Exchange account also for the birthday calendar, and I get the birthday alarm 1 day before D-day each time since the beginning for all my contacts... Maybe it's a specificity of the exchange account?

On OS version 1.0.8.19 still no notifications/alarms for birthdays. All of my birthday entries in the people app are created manually and they appear in the calendar. I have no sync with Facebook/MS Exchange/Google activated or in use.

unbelievable that this is still open, it seems to be such a minor feature but actually my phone's BD calendar was what I rely on for reminding me of birthdays... I missed so many birthdays this year like never before, should probably go back to my papercopy I started with 20 years ago, insane

chemist ( 2015-01-21 02:19:43 +0300 )edit

Why was this turned into a wiki?

Orologiaio ( 2015-01-21 02:56:21 +0300 )edit

Why is this question closed ? Does it mean that we will never have this basic feature ?

Tucky ( 2015-03-05 23:05:40 +0300 )edit

Agree... I expect this basic feature as well since it doesn't make sense for me to have imported birthdays in the calendar without alarm.

I don´t know why this is a wiki, but I would say what we talk about is more a bug report than a feature request, because what´s the big idea behind birthday calendar without notification? I´d love nothing better than voting up this question ten times a day.

The birthday alarms were only enabled a short time in the beginning. They were then removed on purpose as contacts synchronized e.g. from Facebook might create alarms almost every day, which would be quite annoying.

Could be a future enhancement to have alarms opt-in or then contact specific.

...or exclude Facebook-imported contacts from the alarm, or simply put a visual notification of birthdays in the events view: https://together.jolla.com/question/1339/show-calendar-entries-in-events-view/

Sure, calendar events in events view are considered and would help on general usage too.

I am in favor of defining for each contact if I want an alarm or not. Eventually, if we had groups for contacts, a configuration by group.

Tucky ( 2014-06-26 14:41:53 +0300 )edit

@Tucky wouldn't that be achieved easiest by removing that information from a contact as i always done on previous mobile phones.

@abc123 I don't know if you mean that the alarm should be set by default or if you mean that it is easiest to remove the birthday information ? In the first case, I just said that we should be able to toggle the alarm, I am agnostic about if it should be on or out by default. In the second case, I don't want to delete data, it can be useful to know how old is a contact. But I don't necessarily want to be reminded about each of my contacts.
