Hello Jolla, hello Sailfish fans!

First of all... sorry about this post, it is in no way question, bug report nor feature request. I'm always nagging here about Sailfish and why Jolla doesn't do this and doesn't do that.

Sometimes we'd need to give positive feedback too, I guess :-)

Because there are qualities in Sailfish that just smashes the competition! My absolute favorite of all times - is that when you tap on some text on Sailfish you get the cursor (is it cursor in English? - I mean the place where you'd next type text) EXACTLY where you want! You can pin point it anywhere in the text and it lands just where you want. I mean... this is just fantastic. Iphone sucks big time with this. Their cursor lands randomly where ever and to compensate it they need to have magnification glass (tap and hold) to correct the problem. I just hate it (and my employer forces us to use Iphones, which is pretty dull). I can't remember now (from Xperia X's days of android - now flashed ;-) if it's the same shite with Android, but atleast not as good as in Sailfish.

And the swiping system of Sailfish OS is just brilliant.

So... Let us know what qualities you like in Sailfish and show your love to the system :-)

Suppose - just suppose - the cursor doesn't land "EXACTLY where you want!". Maybe the user is not as young as you are, or they are bouncing about in a car (as a passenger, of course). How can you move it?

The iOS magnifying glass that you so dislike is actually a neat piece of UI. (On Android I use the the cursor keys on the Hacker Keyboard so I'm not sure what it provides.)

Of course there are different scenarios to use a phone - suppose you are in entertainment park's roller coaster or in a moon rocket lifting off? I mean... this is very subjective of course to a multitude of variants. Well, it's just me, but for me SFOS cursor is way superb o other phone OS. I'm 39 and doesn't have the smallest fingers I'd assume.

lumen ( 2017-11-04 09:37:06 +0300 )edit

@DaveRo: In case you need it, there's this magnifying feature in SFOS, too. So no need to envy iOS users. ;)

ossi1967 ( 2017-11-04 10:01:32 +0300 )edit

Well, the irony is that it's exactly the cursor I despair of, at least here within the browser. ;)

lakutalo ( 2017-11-04 10:01:38 +0300 )edit

"in entertainment park's roller coaster or in a moon rocket lifting off..." Hmmm.

Your point - that tapping does seem pretty accurate - is a good one. But I assume that this is hardware-related rather than the OS. On my Nokia N810 I used to have to calibrate the screen - but I haven't seen that for years. My Nexus 9 is also very accurate when tapping. My wife's iPad much less so - but it's very old.

As for the Jolla GUI - I'd say it's a curate's egg. Personally I'd like an to get rid of pulley menus - at least as an option. Try selecting one if several pulley options in a roller-coaster ;)

Updates and Patches

Which of your other phones still get patches and updates after four years? - still working almost like a new one. :)

The Jolla 1 is faster and more capable than when I bought it. Yes, It is simply amazing.

vattuvarg ( 2017-11-04 19:27:46 +0300 )edit

... and one charge still lasts up to 9d.

lakutalo ( 2017-11-04 19:34:33 +0300 )edit

@lakutalo unfortunately fixes are for Jolla Hardware, Turing Phones, Aquafish phone received quite a but less love, hardware bug fixes, than their Jolla counterparts.

Developer Mode

No uber-geeky jail-breaking needed just for root access and ssh.

It is quite amusing to see the warning when starting the Sailfish X. Now the phone is truly mine.

vattuvarg ( 2017-11-04 19:44:14 +0300 )edit

@vattuvarg Even though this is a security flaw, now anybody who have your phone can extract all information easily using another computer (nevermind, this was the case with all my other phones with cyanogenmod). I just want to say, you have to sell your soul to google or apple, otherwise there is no opportunity to "feel" secure.

But yes, I love to have a little Linux computer with ssh and root-permissions \o/.

The cost of security is eternal vigilance.

If the service is free then you might be the product.

true that! i LOVE the instant and on Demand Jailbreak function in Jolla, "devel-su" etc, its because unlike Google or Apple Jolla doesnt assume their users are stupid.

I belive the Sailfish UI is what iOS always tried to be. Just look at their new iPhone X ("the future"), which finally starts to embrace gesture navigation... And Sailfish had all this and more for how long exactly? Apple should just go and license it from Jolla :-)

Apple's iOS still lacks multitasking. Beautiful task switching, yes, but no multitasking.

Extreme fast os, never seen so fast boot, check for mail, taking a picture is super fast, ui is superior although sailfish 1 ui was just better. No bulk installed and patches from communitymakes the phone individual.

You're right. Some days ago I flashed my Xperia. Booting into Android before flashing felt like an eternity till it's usable. SFOX seems to be much faster.

I love the integrated messaging. I only want one app for chat communication and Sailfish OS at least provides it for SMS and XMPP (though the XMPP part could get some more love). Imagine how great it would be if you could get integrated Matrix, Tox, Wire, Threema, Whatsapp and whatever there is into your messages app. As bonus a phone call is just a swipe away.

Yes, XMPP could get some more love. ...a lot more love.

vattuvarg ( 2017-11-04 19:30:24 +0300 )edit

But then Jolla would turn into Loveboat.

On-board SDK

Import and compile C++ Linux packages on the phone. All you need is an internet connection.

Write your own bash scripts or Python apps using nano in the terminal on the phone. Syntax highlighting included, of course.

You cannot get geekier than that! :)

Using vi would be slightly geekier, imho.... ;)

vattuvarg ( 2017-11-04 19:23:55 +0300 )edit

But only slightly. I did this on purpose so that you can top it. :D

This one day I was getting myself familiarized to how Windows 10 would work with touch gestures. My first thought was: "Man, Microsoft REALLY needs help from Jolla to design UI gestures!!!" Now I know even better how much I like the Sailfish OS fluid UI!!! :D

The design language is great, as well as the intuitive use of the os by wiping.
