"There has not yet been a widespread Linux malware infection of the type that Microsoft Windows software has; this is attributable generally to the malware's lack of root access and fast updates to most Linux vulnerabilities." in the URL. What else ?

Possibility of malwares on our Jolla is not huge. Sailors are responsives. Any backdoor, system weakness will not have a long lifetime. And malware makers focus on the number of terminal available AND the max lifetime before system update. A malware cleaner could be usefull in scan mode only. :)

For the 2nd URL : Ok ... pickup clamav's armv7 packages and let the signature updater check every minute (if I remember well). The main issue is battery and fair-use drain. But the question keeps interesting and quite important.

For the 3rd URL : Spyware shown by RMS is in Cannonical desktop environment implementation. The main issue, in this case, is Unity. Nothing in common with Sailfish. The best behaviour has just been given by @rainisto in his answer. :)

@TNZ: These days I read about a refrigerator haven been taken over by malware sending fake e-mails! Malware authors are not any longer going for the big numbers OSes only but also for the ones they expect to be little protected. The question is well grounded!!!

As long as there is zero virus/malware on Sailfish OS, people should NOT run any scanners on the device. They are useless, will make your device slower and will eat your battery life.

If there ever will be any malware released, we will respond accordingly.

If you want to be prepared then don't blindly install rpm's from internet and stick with store where there is a QA process.

Unfortunately, using Jolla Store apps only is not sufficient. And how easy it is to take over even quality ensured apps has just been demonstrated with Google Chrome and apps showing advertisings suddenly (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Erweiterungen-fuer-Browser-Chrome-blenden-Werbung-ein-2088557.html, German only), fridges are spamming now (http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Internet-of-Things-Mein-Kuehlschrank-als-Spammer-2088336.html, also German only). You at Jolla will not be able to ensure that you will detect malware quickly on each and all Jollas. A concept for protecting Sailfish is required and should include scanning (running local malware detection software may not be necessary as a general approach for all users but at least for more exposed users).

There are multiple concepts available that can be taken into use if problem arises. And some of the enablers are already in the firmware. So we should be able to react quickly if need be. We will able to hotfix, blacklist, obsolete apps etc. But there is no need to take them into use yet.
