Have you seen questions or tags very close to each other, but not quite duplicates? In this wiki we sort these out together. Add an answer to start a new discussion.

1. Sorting of closely related questions (why is this important?)

2. To achieve a meaningful, clear, intuitive and shared notion of set of tags

3. Already cleaned (links to discussions):

4. Code-of-conduct! Before merging duplicates / changing existing tags:

  • Suggestions (formatted as "Answer") should be listed here for at least 2 working days to see what comments they get.
  • Thereafter, answers should be revised according to the result of the comments, for example, making it clear that a certain set of tags should not be merged and stating the reason.
  • Wait another working day before you start editing tags and check what the discussion is. If previously there has been a lot of different ideas and comments, you may even ask that a moderator gives the go-ahead.
  • Report all retagging with a comment, so that moderators can cleanup the back-end (otherwise unused tags are shown in the list of choises when tagging a question)

@jgr I edited that part to be not so normative: "If you run into a question that can't actually be answered at all, or is a simple How-to or Poll / Survey consider commenting that to the writer and/or convert the question to a wiki (edit -> mark with "community wiki")"

Is it better now?

I propose to introduce the concept of sticky topics centralizing news / main ideas and so on. A meta-topic could be created to gather sitcky topics title. Yesterday, I was suggested to use tags, but it's not efficient. I think sticky topics could be good to reduce the number of "duplicate topics".

TNZ ( 2014-01-21 10:44:09 +0300 )edit

@TNZ Who selects sticky topics, and by what criteria? And where are they shown?

foss4ever ( 2014-01-21 11:01:12 +0300 )edit

@jjaone : The main idea is to have a cleaner area. I think that guys who spend a lot of time here are the best (like admins & moderators) to manage sticky topics and the meta-topic.

Maybe, a specific site section giving news about activity here could help instead of maintening sticky-topics.

TNZ ( 2014-01-21 11:12:20 +0300 )edit

@TNZ A Dashboard giving a quick overview of what is happening in here, hot topis, latest questions, answer, comments, whos on line, top 10 roadmapped and / or closed questions, etc etc..with selectable sticky topics, news, howtos, guides + a link section to related Jolla & developnent spesific sites like Care, Store, blogs and community portals..

wlan / wifi (are they the same?)

WLAN = Wireless Local.Area.Network

WiFI = Wireless Fidelety

So, they are not the same, but often used as synonymous, and some prefer the other based on what threy have got used to.. Also, Jolla UI mentions 'wlan'.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Practically yes and ppl tend to use them interchangeably, but there is difference (see e.g here; http://www.ask.com/question/what-is-the-difference-between-wifi-and-wlan). Wireless LAN is the network based on wireless trchnologies and WiFi is more of a branding name.. IMO here we should use WLAN (also mentioned in the device itself) and change all wifi tags to wlan. I'm quite sure there will be new questions tagged with wifi (some have gotten used to that) but we can change them when encountering rhem.

Agreed with @jjaone

A big discussion is starting up after Jolla released the TOH developer kit. These 3 questions are involved, each one looking at the issue from a slightly different point of view. There are already a lot of votes, answers and comments and I wouldn't do any cleaning (merging/moving content) in these, but instead I'd like to see all of them having links in the beginning of the question to other two. What do you say?

  1. https://together.jolla.com/question/5906/how-to-assign-a-custom-ambience-for-an-nfc-theotherhalf/ (21 votes, 3 answers, lot of comments)
  2. https://together.jolla.com/question/14852/jolla-store-extension-section-for-ambiences/ (55 votes, 5 answers, lot of comments)
  3. https://together.jolla.com/question/16345/order-custom-toh/ (17 votes, no answers but some comments)

Questions are presented by @datakurre@TimTTK@fravaccaro, answers so far are from @ymb@TimTTK@simo@virgi26@juju_des_highlands Maybe this involved group could throw in an opinion here?

simo ( 2014-02-05 22:35:45 +0300 )edit

added links for both questions in jolla store extension question.

Seems I missed that TOH devdloper kit announcement, could anyone share a link to it? Thanks.

How about:

  • network (38)
  • networking (1)

Maybe even:

  • connman (13)

and merge

  • connection (33) <-- internet/network/gprs connection
  • connect (6) <-- bluetooth, wlan, usb and for some reason steam
  • connectivity (28) <-- same as connection
  • connection-problem (1) <-- This is about the usb connection

Networking is what you do in a network and connman is a daemon to manage network connections in embedded Linux envs ;) I'd go for networkand leave that connmanstay cause when qiestions have been tagged with it the topics probably rekated to the tool, or connection management in Jolla, i.e not to be merged with network (which is the infrastructure to get connected with).

foss4ever ( 2014-02-06 12:51:26 +0300 )edit

Ok, but there also is connection, connect, connectivity, connection-problem...

PyroDevil ( 2014-02-06 12:58:36 +0300 )edit

Which you didn't mention in your post ;) You could just add them there and suggest what should we do about them..

What do you think should be done about a duplicate question, if the duplicate has (significantly) more votes, but the older one is more informative or has relevant discussion in comments?

The one I'm thinking about now:

Duplicate: https://together.jolla.com/question/28088/autocorrect-word-on-space-or-punctuation/#comment-28327 (+8)

Older: https://together.jolla.com/question/25210/enhancement-for-word-prediction/ (+2)

Comments

@ssahla: the older post prevails IMHO. While closing as duplicate, an answer providing the link to the original as well as invitation to vote/comment there, plus adding duplicate tag are the current practices...

microSD cards

The tag list on this subject is long. After some cleaning, currently in use are:

  • sdcard (32)
  • microsd (27)
  • 64gb-sd (3)
  • microsdhc (1)
  • microsdxc (1)
  • mount-sd (1)

(It does not seem to make sense, to reduce this set further.)

Not used are:

  • sd
  • sd-card
  • card
  • µsd
  • missd (may have not been related to sd card)
  • micro

@eric: Could you please remove the unused tags from the system?

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Just as a note: Cleaning included:

  • sd-card ==> sdcard (using the one, more often used)
  • sd ==> sdcard (using the one, more often used)
  • card ==> sdcard (using the one, more often used; no other use than in relation to SD card)
  • µsd ==> sdcard (using the one, more often used)

"missd" and "micro" were "empty tags" already.

It can be good to add askbot feature to mark some tag as the synonym, so it will be automatically substituted by "main" tag everywhere

Edit: This feature can be voted here (requires signing in to askbot forum):

Do you mean (for example) marking mail and email as synonims of e-mail? Yes, that would be great!

Just a suggestion for even more efficient cleaning: Please go through your own questions and

  • Consider closing some of your own questions as outdated (add tag ´outdated´ too)
  • Consider removing older (months old) questions with only few votes or editing them with a better topic and tags
  • Inform moderators (add comment with @ nick) if you find an old issue already released but missing ´roadmap´ tag (Moderators are users marked with star sign and "moderator" in the user list)
  • If you have gained more knowledge later, try to answer your own question so that the issue will get solved
  • Form your questions by the guidance shared here. Don't leave questions which are impossible to answer (or mark those as wiki)

I'm pretty sure that almost all of us can find at least one question in your questions list requiring attention on this. You can find your own questions by clicking your nick on the top panel.
