Dear Jolla, i am your die hard supporter, i have begon with Jolla 1 device (2 of them actually), and i am now with Sony Xperia X (bought it because of SailfishX)...

I used it for couple of weeks, but constantly needed to install Android apps because Sailfish had no apps for Whatsapp, Telegram (Telegram app exists, but it is not working ok), Viber, Skype, Signal messiging...i must go back to Android because of this...

Sailfish have best user expirience, i just love to use it, but its lack of apps will destroy it...

Please work with Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber, Signal messenger, Skype, to make apps available for Sailfish platform... this will bring much more users to us... (Whatsapp app existed for Sailfish, but got blocked by Whatsapp itself...that is shame, it was best Whatsapp expirience i have had...simple and clean (Coderus made it))...

I imagine you don't have money to support all of those messeging apps, but try to support one at least than... Make for example Telegram app yourself (or hire Coderus or someone else), and bundle it with Sailfish as official messiging app...

P.S. Eddited because my autocorrection made correction and placed Cerberus (and it shuld be Coderus) in my text... it is corrected by me in text, but i must mention it because it was funny to read...

Please try to do something so developers would keep making quality apps for this platform.

Thank you in advance

Best regards

Miki

Andrey goes by coderus ;) He is doing awesome apps and now works for the russian sailfish initiative OMP. But if you research cerberus and know him from online interaction, you know why i go rolling on the floor caughing and laughing for he next 10 minutes now.

Regarding Messenger apps, it is not up to Jolla sadly. Even the side project of an official spotify dev got refused by his company. Rumors are spotify did not want to put manpower into officially supporting the platform. Even when perfectly working native app was in hands reach and almost ready... Sailfish distribution numbers are too small to justify support from a major player. If you ever see one, you know the company is propably not evil

Amazon made the Firephone if you remember and upfronted the development cost for creating Facebook, Whatsapp clients as i remember and that all didnt work out quite as planned. For Jolla a focus on security, supporting a variety of communication protocols and eventually VOIP Message over IP directly through the built in Apps would be best (encrypted communications thats is)

Thanx for info guys.... cerberus ahahahah... i can't believe it... my autocorrection placed cerberus (tracking app) and not Coderus...i didn't see it... i ment Coderus ofcourse.... (Thanx for pointin it out)...(i am going to roll on the floor caughing and laughing for the next 10 minutes myself also haha)

Well, we use at our company Signal messenger, it is a must for me, and with my family in other country i use Skype.... Telegram could be messenger to use by Jolla, as it is completly opensource...very secure and with many many options...it is just perfect i think...

I would like everything to be opensource, but that is not going to be for long time (if ever)... I know Sailfish don't have many users....but things like messiging , video calls, quality apps, will attract more and more people...

At this moment it is not possible to use Sailfish without using many android apps a side.... I find Sailfish user interface much more appealing than Android, but if i must install 10 android apps on top of Sailfish (without using Sailfish apps constantly (as you would use it with messeging apps))...

I think messeging is most important to attract more users to Sailfish, so Sailfish could grow up....

Best regards

Miki

Communication is important so it is equally important to use open standards.

...and Google has been working a while already on making android less open.

The trend among a majority of the social media companies is to restrict their software and to remove open protocols.

There is no reason for Sailfish to "atttact more users" if the price we pay for it is to sacrifice the essence of what Sailfish is all about. If you're OK with using proprietary services, you can also be OK with using an Android phone in the first place.

What you mean there is no reason for Sailfish to attract more people ??? How you think Jolla/Sailfish will survive without users...???

I am all against proprietary software, but at this moment we don't have messaging solution for Sailfish other than SMS and phone call... come on... you think this is enough in 2017 ???

Sailfish shuld have something like BBM (Blackberry Messenger) is for Blackberry... Blackberry made BBM for its platform...but later on they made support for Android...so, people who used BB10 (Blackberry operating system) could have contact with people who used Android or IOS or whatever...

Sailfish can't survive on its own....it needs users...and users at mobile platform are aatracted with quality apps...

I would be happy to tell all my friends and family members to install Sailfish messenger on their android phones so we could have contact with each other, and for them would be probably no problem to install one app more just for me and my Sailfish device.... but hey... we don't have Sailfish messenger do we ?

So even people who are against google and propiertary apps are using it for sure... (or if they don't using it, they don't have contact with other 95% friends who do use Android or iOS)

We can be proud to use opensource operating system, but we need to be smart to, an know when it is time to help this opensystem to grow.... Later on when it is mature, with many users and apps, it is easy to abandon propiertary apps or services....

Anyways...this is how i look at things...didn't mean to attack anyone... i respect every ones thoughts...

Best regards

Miki

The problem i see is, that on Sailfish opensource alternatives are also just half implemented. Xmpp is usable but there is as far as I know no MUC support, no voice and video calls... With a powerfull xmpp client I could have a chance to convince my friends switching to Xmpp...

Some of the services on your list are proprietary. Jolla cannot do much about it if the company behind them refuses to support Sailfish. (Like actively blocking the client.)

Really, if you for whatever reasons want to use such a service, you need to buy a phone they officially support.

However, the experience that those companies have the power to dictate which hardware and OS you use should be enough motivation for you to delete them from your list. I don't know what your motivation was to choose Sailfish, but if it had anything to do with freedom or independence and thelike, you should have learned your lesson by now and deleted your WhatsApp-/Skype-/...-accounts. Those services are evil.

well i wouldnt go so far and go the mainstream way to call them evil.evil is something inhuman to me. but anyway i agree that they are not userfriendly and their (privacy) policies are not in your favour. also i dislike the feature a lot to "easily show all your friends" by automatically collecting everything in your private adress book. also i cant agree on the topic as important apps is a really subjective topic and as you can see some people already say the one you mention are not important to them at all - in the contrary.

anyway as i can agree that it is nice to have some messanger/video/voice service with similar functions- i have delta chaz, matrix/riot and wire in mind for thar. also some are still in early development and some features are not yet present those are.the ones that are the counterpart to those mentioned. some might add xmpp- but as this is mesage only and far away from a usable video/voice alternative+ lost its simplicity when it was dropped by several email providers (and you could no longer use "you already have an account") i leave this out. but if you only need messaging you can add that to.

long story short - i dont see apps as task for jolla, but to create a plattform that makes developing apps and giving/selling them to users attractive and easy.

@kaktux: taking away a person's freedom of choice and abusing the position they have in the market is evil. Personal freedom happens to be very important to me.

Whatsapp is Facebook now and shares information with facebook, why not just use the facebook clients then to message and i believe their are web versions as well as SFOS versions such as sailbook (not sure that allows messaging). For security i would stay away from all major platforms, i abandoned Whatsapp 6years or so ago, Facebook Messenger 4years or so ago, i would not use Signal which seems to be riddled with bloatware and appears gimmicy, and i would never use SMS through your phone provider where the government essentially has a hotline to your data, so that leaves you with VOIP or MessageOverIP apps you can trust and where you encrypt the communication.
