gms.persistent using a lot of CPU

Lately my Intex Aquafish has been acting up. It frequently gets very hot, though there doesn't seem to be anything in particular going on, and I might realise it's used up half it's battery in an hour or two. The Android apps also seem really sluggish at times, and even crash unexplicably.

When I run 'top' in terminal, it seems the process .gms.persistent is the culprit. Based on my googling it indeed is an Google Play Services related process. It runs using >15% of the CPU most of the time, with peaks of up to as much as 120 %. If that means it's using two processors, or is just a glitch, I don't know.

I'm thinking of doing a factory reset, but first I wanted to ask if anyone here has an easier fix. Googling and the search function gave me nothing. Anyone else have experience with this particular problem?

I don't have an Aquafish and I do not use Dalvik Layer on my Jolla1, but a quick Google reveals this; https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/fix-google-play-services-battery-drain-fix-no-apk-root-privacy-guard-or-script-needed.297708/

By the way, you may also download, install and run Android apps from Google without Google services, especially if you activate AlienDalvik occasionally and do not need paid apps. Just use Yalp store.

The following question seem to be related:

  1. Android applications very slow and unstable

  2. Android app installation takes hours
