I have a provider which users national roaming, since they don't have a network themselves. In mobile networks there should be not only an option for always and ask for roaming, but also an option for allow national roaming.

Enabling roaming per default has the problem of unpredictability, since I live near the border to another country.

Is it not sufficient to set the provider fix to one of those, a scan of mobile operators reveal (settings -> mobile network -> disable automatic network selection (or similar)? As far as I know these national roaming SIM cards are a PITA, because noone really understands the tables on the SIM cards.

not really, since I heard that some could use different networks as home networks. Fixing to one is similar to an connection reduction. I heard that Cyanogenmod has this option for national roaming.

I'm a bit surprised this isn't working, as saunalahti in Finland is a virtual network too from what I understood.

Could you tell what provider?

I have yesss (Austria) and my home network is A1 but Data counter shows in Home network no activity. Only in Roaming.

I have the same Issue with "drei" in Austria, as they do not have an own 2G network besides their 3G, instead you are allowed to use the regular 2G net from T-mobile as part of the contract. The problem is that Sailfish handles this as regular roaming. Cyanogenmod handles this issue very well...

Best option would be to set a list of allowed operators (ID's) in roaming mode.

There is no such thing as "national roaming". In some countries there is virtual operators that are working in roaming mode. Jolla or any other device cannot make difference between virtual roaming and real roaming.

maybe an internal list in jolla (or through jolla servers), which networks to include in national roaming, if someone has such a network?

renegade22 ( 2013-12-25 23:00:31 +0300 )edit

The thing with these "national roaming" SIMs is, that on the SIM is a list of its prefered operators. There is no "home operator" any more, so the SIM always roams. The modem has to figure out of its own, which provider to log in. Thatfore the modem must read and interprete this list.

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:11:12 +0300 )edit

(Darn limited allowed characters). In case of Jolla the modem is integrated, so it has to read this list an try manually to log into a network from top of the list. I once saw a paper from Vodafone (will provide it, when I find it again), that described the procedure. Ugli it was.

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:13:10 +0300 )edit

so, it should be possible to differentiate between expensive international and included national roaming and not only allow or allow roaming altogether?

renegade22 ( 2013-12-25 23:14:22 +0300 )edit

AFAIK the trick is, that the modem starts at the beginning of the list with the cheapest providers and tries to log onto their net. As the list continues, the operator has more and more unsatisfying contracts with the network operators and the modem should avoid them, if possible.

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:24:37 +0300 )edit

My understanding is, that it could be quite painful, when the modem has to try for quite some time to log into every net in the list starting from the top. That takes time and the user has to wait. The list itself is not that clear and the modems behave differently.

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:27:08 +0300 )edit

I understand. But for somebody, living on the border and as a provider such virtual network, enabling roaming per default could be a pretty expensive thing.

renegade22 ( 2013-12-25 23:27:14 +0300 )edit

Yes, that is true. My thought process was: When you select one provider and configure that one fix, you should have the same network quality as if you had no "national roaming" SIM at all and had Roaming disabled. Or am I missing here something?

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:34:28 +0300 )edit

Some virtual networks have more then one provider. Setting one to fix equals loss in quality you payed for. Even I can set for two different providers.

renegade22 ( 2013-12-25 23:39:01 +0300 )edit

Ah! Now I get it: You think that your national roaming card provides better quality than the the usual SIMs? This is correct in that sense, as you can use another network in case of missing net coverage of one certain provider. You continue along the list and take the next one.

ibins ( 2013-12-25 23:44:45 +0300 )edit

I disagree with the initial answer. Where I live, I'm using an operator which has it's own 2G+3G network in many cities, and then "roams" to another operator where they don't have coverage. Jolla seems to track this though already. When I was recently abroad, I noticed the "triangle roaming" icon. But this does icon does not show up when I'm in my home country, roaming or not. So I believe this issue may be solved.
