Hangouts keep showing SMS notifications

Since Android apps can't aggressively register themselves as SMS applications in AlienDalvik and SMS support was removed from Hangouts, Google Hangouts app keeps spamming me with notifications about SMS messages that I "can't display" because I don't have any SMS app installed.

I know that this is mostly Google at fault here (god damn it, I get it, Hangouts is no longer an SMS app, now shut the fuck up, ok?), but for the sake of improved Android support, I think AlienDalvik should simply return SFOS Messages app as a default one.

Just a remark. I'm using Hangouts of our corporate Google account with the XMPP account of SailfishOS. This is perfectly integrated into the messaging app and notifications. Of course, video and audio conferencing is not supported, but for this feasture I use anway my notebook.

I have one issue with XMPP, which is, if I receive a message while I'm offline, I won't be able to check that on my phone. There is a web app, which is terrible on desktop and even worse on a phone. There is a native app (Hangish), but it's not reliable enough for me to use it unfortunately.

That’s true. You have to be always online. For me it’s usually the case, if I’m not in the airplane or fast long distance train. Unfortunately, SailfishOS can loose the data connection sometimes. Therefore Sailfish Utilities are essential for me. I have to reset the network each morning after standing up.

I thought Google had removed support for XMPP with Hangouts? Does this support group (text-only) chats too?

Indeed, Google doesn’t support XMMP officially. But it still works. You need to enter your email address, the server address talk.google.com and the default port 5222. I don’t like to have an app for each service I use. That’s why I appreciate the option to add accounts in SailfishOS. This is - for me - one essential aspect of the great user experience of SailfishOS. I use almost only the few default apps. Hopefully Jolla or - maybe - developers will add more services for a deep integration.

I think group chats are not supported, but I have to check it. Hangouts is - unfortunately - the official channel in our company. I use it usually for direct messages on my mobile phone. For AV conferences with screen sharing I use my laptop.
