Currently, in SMS view, it is unclear to what phone number (or type) SMS will be sent. It's pretty obvious if recipient has only one phone number. But if recipient has several numbers - you had to explicitly set correct phone type with "change type" button to be sure that you are sending to the right phone number.

Same goes to SMS history. You can't say to what number (again, in the case where recipient has several numbers) SMS were sent or from what number it was received.

So my suggestion is to display phone type in the same string where SMS date stamp is displayed. Or make separate SMS logs for each of contact's phone type. And also make "change type" button to display currently selected phone type instead of "change type" text. In case of separate SMS logs for each phone type - "change type" button is not needed at all.

Nearly the same thing is with call history. Call history doesn't distinguish contact's different phone types, merging everything in one record. And sometimes it is important to know when calls were made for each type of contact's phone numbers. So such records should be separated and each call history record should show correct phone type.

Agree as well; especially for business use these details can be crucial.

I have friends with 2 mobile numbers. One is a local and the other a foreign number. For me it's important to know from call history which number I would start to call back.

Moreover, if it would be possible to tag numbers with custom tags (not only work, home...) it would be easier to recognize which number is it without even reading numbers.

This would be a very important improvement! Especially regarding the call list.

Pull to the left when in the composing SMS page and the contact-card opens with the used number hilighted. For the history there is https://together.jolla.com/question/1355/display-contact-number-in-call-history/

That all this is not separated into single logs per number but logs per contact is a feature called unifying and is one of the most loved features ever since its introduction to Maemo.

The same should apply to the call list (when opening a contact card from there).

I can't say that it is very convenient.

This is a problem for me too, I have a contact with 2 phone numbers and when receiving an SMS from him, it is impossible to know which phone number sent the message! The "change type" option is only useful when you know which phone number your contact is using at the moment. For the call log, I can see the difference because with the current update (version 8, 1.0.8.19, I don't know older ones) there is written "Personal" next to the contact name when it's not the main mobile number and the same thing should apply for SMS/MMS: writing the phone number or an indicator like "Personal"/"Work"/"Other" next to each message. I found a workaround where you can see all details including phone number, using the command commhistory-tool with options listgroups and then list -group "group_number" for messages and listcalls for call log.

Summary for Jolla: To fix this problem for SMS/MMS conversations, phone number information should be added next to each message and instead of the "change type" option, I suggest to add a message box where user can select the good phone number before sending the message (like Nokia N9 before a call, that will prevent mistakes).

Update: I made some patches to display contact phone number in SMS conversations, call history and incoming calls https://together.jolla.com/question/1355/display-contact-number-in-call-history/#post-id-57055

When in the sms conversation view, flick left to see contact info. The number the sms came from is highlighted.

As for the call log, disable Quick call in Settings > Phone. Now when you tap a name in the call log, you'll see the contact info with the used number highlighted. (This can be handy if the contact's numbers aren't labeled "work"/"personal"/etc.)

@ssahla I heard about the flick left trick but like someone said, it adds another layer because you need to open the contact card to view the phone number. I didn't see we can disable quick call, it looks better, thanks. For the sms conversation view, when you flick left, you can only see what was the last phone number you contacted (not the last one who contacted you, I tried it), you can't see what phone number was used next to each message. I updated my post with a link to some patches I made.
