Sailfish 3 - Q3/2018 [not relevant]

Indeed, October is just around the corner. Jolla, how about a status update?

And the official announcements are up.

Basically :

• roll-out starts mid-october.
• early access get it by end october
• final release in the following weeks (depending on how much bugfixes to be done), so by early november.

They'll be late about a month and a half from their 3rd quarter initial target.

New tablets. Nice! Or are these corporate devices, Sailfish RU, no Android ..

I was hoping for the same but recent investment in KaiOS from Google that powers the new Nokia 8810 (and phones of RJio) and the relationship between HMD and Google makes it not that probable... :(

But I'm happily ready to be proven wrong...

on the hand KaiOS is the descendant of Boot-to-Gecko / Firefox OS - i.e. basically running web apps.

so any market share foothold held by KaiOS potentially means also positive fallout on any other platform able to run web apps.

(i.e.: if the rummors of WhatsApp on KaiOS turn out true, that means Sailfish users could also run the same WebApp).

Awesome -- and only two months after the announced deadline!

mobiflip.de attributes fonearena.com as source, but the claim in that post (At the event the company will unveil the major Sailfish OS 3 update) is made without support from any verifiable sources whatsoever.

Sailfish X version is 2.1.3.7 Kymijoki, at the time of writing the latest possible. According to Jolla, the next major upgrade of Sailfish OS is coming in the coming weeks.

As stated in the article 2.1.4 is expected in a couple of weeks but the version after that could well be 3.0. The development of linux distributions are usually more evolution than revolution so the changes to Sailfish OS is probably along those lines.

What Jolla has communicated so far is that the next version is 2.1.4 Lapuanjoki which be followed by 2.2.0 Mouhijoki. Anything else is speculation. Dreaming is not prohibited, but building expectations on speculation and rumours will only make people disappointed in the end.

@luen: It's not "dreaming". If they decide that either Lapuanjoki or Mouhijoki will be "3.0", nothing would change in terms of features.

I think Librem Purism have a way to go before they have a viable handset.

but you have to keep in mind that a) they got experience wirh such projects already,although not a phone. b) they probably/hopefully will use plasma mobile as os- so the os isnt their "concern" alone to develop. i dont think they will miss the planned release date. and tbh if jolla doesnt step it up a notch and offers viable buy+use sailfish phones until then - i will be gone. buying a phone, install myself- a nogo. and till today i dont get.what sony actually contributed.

Certainly interesting. While I wish to have a device independent of Google (forced usage of Google services), I still want to be able to run Android apps. There are ticket apps, restaurant apps (Vapiano), banking apps, etc. Jolla does make this possible, the Librem will obviously not support this.

Libre Purism is expected to come up with their product by end of this year. The support from the some of the most used DE like KDE/Plasma and Gnome 3, and their expertise on hardware-software integration would certainly help them to move ahead fastly. At least hopefully they won't be having simple issues like no forward option for messages after multiple versions, and so on.

@Stefanix - although it shouldn't be a reason to buy a phone to run apps for another os i get your point. But: guess who is behind the development of shashlik (although i dont know how active this is since the last release seems to be 2016)? KDE. But besides that - the kde i know brings along 99% of the software/apps i need already - with a much better functionality then the current jolla apps. add the normal "phone" functions - and i'm sold. So Sailfish has to step it up to make me consider buying another sailfish phone.
