[Bug report] All internet traffic fails via tethering while Jolla phone is connected to VPN

Problem:

I frequently share/tether my Jolla phone's internet connections with my other devices.

I recently set up a VPN connection for my Jolla phone (Settings-> VPN-> Add new VPN-> OpenVPN). It works great for the phone. However, since then, all internet traffic from my other devices fail while using my phone's connection while the phone is connected to the VPN. When the phones VPN connection is turned off, everything using the phones connection has working internet access. I've tried rebooting, turning stuff on, etc. in every possible order I can think of.

Simply, using the tethered connection seems impossible atm while the phone's VPN connection is active.

That’s actually good, if it worked you would have a security issue ;)

@Nieldk: why? The same thing works just fine on my computer.

Sure, it can be made to “work” it’s called split tunneling. with split tunnel you make a path directly into your network, bypassing any firewall. Another risk is that If a computer has a VPN connection into the network and has enabled split tunneling there is a danger that while surfing the Internet you might become infected with some virus. With the VPN connection the virus can then propagate onto your network again bypassing the protections provided by a firewall.

Interesting, thanks.

To clarify: I wasn't trying to split the traffic. I was trying to run all traffic through the phone's VPN tunnel. (When activating the VPN connection on the phone, no VPN connection was active from other devices. And, in the case that other devices would have had their own VPN connections open, those should then run through the phone's VPN tunnel.)

While the phone was connected to the VPN, other devices could still connect to the phone's network but no traffic got through from/to the other devices.

I don't know why it doesn't work. Probably a bug. But this is normal behavior for Android phones (that's why I hate Android!). As a workaround on SailfishOS you can use SecureFishNet (https://openrepos.net/content/korppi/securefishnet) to route tethered traffic to VPN tunnel. That works pretty well. You need to restart VPN connection after activating tethering.
