I have been holding on to my original jolla all the time, but I am getting tired of its slow responsiveness. I have hardly followed the discussions about xperia, so please forgive the stupid question: can I just buy any old Xperia X and transfer my sailfish on it? Do I need another licence?

excellent, thank you for the detailed comments. Looks like I should be looking for a good and unlocked 5122 then. I assume there is a thread somewhere in these fora about the possible complications of the 5122 installation? And for the file transfer, I should be able to use the SD card for it, I imagine. I remember that I had great difficulties getting the SD card usable on the jolla, years ago - I hope I do not have to go through all those loops again on a new device.

The Jolla 1 uses BTRFS as file system (I think for the sd card as well), while Jolla switched to ext4 on the Xperia. One of the recent updates brought BTRFS support to the Xperia, but as far as I know it is not enabled by default. So check which file system is used on your sd card before moving it to the xperia. Or better prepare to copy the data to a safe location, format the sd card in the xperia and then copy it back onto it.
There is a thread here regarding flashing the F5122 here: https://together.jolla.com/question/168979/any-success-installing-sfos-on-f5122/ According to a post on TMO, the adaptation comes down to editing some files and installing the package for multisim support (see https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1534540&postcount=1061 ). However, I don't own a F5122 and didn't follow this topic, so it can be different by now. What I can tell you is that the official flashing script from Jolla included hints towards official support of the F5122 from the beginning.
Oh, also keep in mind that you can only use either a second SIM or the sd card on the F5122 since they share the same slot.

Just want to report that I found the responses above extremely helpful (thank you). I bought a well-kept 5121 from someone and flashed it successfully. Most things I need are now running well, much better than on my nice Jolla1.
I need to specifically mention the extremely straightforward recommendation in https://together.jolla.com/question/138098/how-to-transfer-sms-and-call-history-from-jolla-to-jolla-c/ which worked also for the xperia and gives me great continuity.
It was trickier to re-install syncevolution which I use for syncing my contacts against memotoo. I also struggled to transfer the full whatsapp-history but it did work in the end.

Honsetly I would wait until the 2.2 Update is out. The actual version om Sailfish X is too bugy! Connenctivity issues, camera issues, sound issues, SD-Card issues, Android app support crashes more often and a laggy interface in some native aps would be my reason. The last update (2.1.4.14) made it even worse. So now even my unsharp camera stopt working (Black screen). But in general without those bugs it is great to have updated Hardware for Sailfish.
I can only report that my experience (with 2.1.4.14) is the exact opposite.
I have not seen anything I would consider a bug. The Xperia connected easily to not only my home wifi but also my work wifi as well as eduroam. It absorbed my sdcard very smoothly. When I loaded gigabytes of music onto that, through rsync from my home server, it took only seconds for the phone to find the music. I have taken a photo or two which look nice. What else would I want?
I think when the next update comes, I might be reluctant to install it, since everything works so well.
I am still sad to let the old jolla disappear in a box, but really none of these things worked smoothly on it anymore.

I used to use syncevolution to be able to synchronize my large addressbook with memotoo. It appears as if native carddav synchronization now works, but a severe limitation of that is that nobody seems to know exactly how it synchronizes, what happens in the case of any errors, and generally what is going on during the sync. Except for that, everything works very well.

you have to buy a new license for 50€ - you cant transfer it. model f5121 is officially supported. model f5122 is useable too (for advanced users). the official support for f5122 should come in the near future.

Is the difference between 5121 and 5122 also important? I would think (hope) that I am "advanced" enough to get sailfish running on the 5122...
