updated 2018-07-02 10:33:51 +0300

This update, nicknamed Mouhijoki, introduces a new simpler single item view in Gallery and Camera app, adds fingerprint unlock support and emoji keyboard layout 😎👍👏. VPN and MDM have become more robust. Android Support has been updated for Xperia X and Jolla C devices. There are several improvements for Email app. Remorse timers can be swiped away to commit immediately. We have dropped continuous focus from Xperia X camera - the camera stays out of focus when it starts until you either tap or try to take a shot - but the pictures seem to be better focused now. Last but not least Sailfish X now officially supports the Xperia X dual SIM phone (F5122).

Many thanks to you our active contributors for your feedback and proposals!

Update version history

  • 2018-05-31: 2.2.0.29 was released to Early Access subscribers (Jolla devices and Xperia). The flashable image of F5122 is not yet available in the download repository.
  • 2018-06-07: 2.2.0.29 was released to all Jolla customers having the following devices: Jolla1, Jolla C, Jolla Tablet, Xperia X (f5121 and f5122). Installable images for Xperia X devices are available at https://shop.jolla.com/downloads/ .

Size of update

The download size of the update depends on the device type and on the OS version currently in the device. Some typical values below:
- Jolla 1 from 2.1.4.14 to 2.2.0: about 300 MB
- Jolla C from 2.1.4.14 to 2.2.0: about 400 MB
- Xperia X from 2.1.4.14 to 2.2.0: about 350 MB

NOTE: The download to Jolla 1, Jolla C and Jolla Tablet is known to be slow. Be patient and keep your device connected to a charger.

Release Highlights

This list contains examples of new features (and some bug fixes) added to SailfishOS compared to the previous release 2.1.4. The release notes of 2.1.4 can be found here: https://together.jolla.com/question/179223/release-notes-214-lapuanjoki/

Mouhijoki 2.2.0 adds the support for Sony Xperia X dual-SIM (model: F5122). Hence Sailfish X can be installed to this device, too. Renewed instructions for installing Sailfish OS to Sony Xperia X devices are here - covering Windows, Linux and Mac computers. The same instructions are valid for F5121 and F5122, however, there is a dedicated flashable image for each device model.

NOTE: If you have a Sony Xperia X dual SIM device (model F5122) running Sailfish X already, please install the official F5122 image of this update 2.2.0.29 (by "flashing" the device - see chapter 6 in https://jolla.com/sailfishxinstall/). Do not try to update your device over-the-air, as your existing device software was never meant to be used in F5122 devices. Flashing the device with update 2.2.0.29 now will ensure that it will work fine and that upcoming over-the-air updates can be installed successfully.

The new F5122 image is available from https://shop.jolla.com/downloads/ . Sign in with your Jolla account you used or purchasing the Sailfish X license.

Issues reported by the community at together.jolla.com and fixed in this update

Changelog

For detailed changelog, see https://together.jolla.com/question/184470/changelog-220-mouhijoki/

Updating your device

Your device must be connected to the Internet and signed into your Jolla account. If your Jolla account is registered for Early Access releases you should receive an OS update notification when an update is available. If you have decided not to take the Early Access registration then you will get the OS update typically one week later.

We warmly recommend making some 3-4 GB of free space to the internal storage of your device before starting the update. Move your pictures and videos to the SD card (or to your PC or cloud service). After the upgrade turn on the option to save pictures and videos directly from the camera to the memory card (Settings > Apps > Camera). This is important particularly in case of "Jolla Phone" devices (product name "Jolla" in Settings > About product).

If you have a Sony Xperia X dual SIM device(model F5122) running Sailfish X already, please install the first official F5122 image (update 2.2.0.29) by "flashing" the device - see chapter 6 in https://jolla.com/sailfishxinstall/. You can download this F5122 image from https://shop.jolla.com/downloads/ . Sign in with your Jolla account you used for purchasing the Sailfish X license.

This is the usual drill before attempting to update your devices:

Take a backup of your data before attempting to update your device and save the backup to an SD card or to some other off-device location (PC, your cloud service). Note that videos and images are not included in cloud-based backups. Do not reboot the device while the update is in progress. Do keep the phone connected to a battery charger during the whole process. Device screen may blank out during the update process; you may waken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress.

For detailed instructions on updating software, visit Zendesk: https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201836347

Notification concerning apps from Open Repos

  • If you use Phonehook or Callrecorder from OpenRepos, uninstall it before upgrading
  • If you use oFono from OpenRepos, revert to the official oFono before upgrading
  • If you use Patchmanager, revert all applied patches before upgrading.

About SD cards

New path to sdcard: Symbolic link /media/sdcard/<uuid>/, actual path /run/media/nemo/<uuid>/
Please read our help article on SD cards supported by Sailfish OS: https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201997993.
Please update your File Browser app to version 1.7.2 (Jolla Store).

Known issues

  • Please do not install Aptoide Store before Android Support as this may prevent installing the latter. Should this happen, fix the issue as follows: devel-su; pkcon remove apkd-config-default; pkcon refresh . Then install Android Support.
  • Bluetooth pairing and audio connections may still fail in some circumstances.
  • Trouble with signing in to Dropbox account sometimes.
  • Events View has been reported to remain empty in some cases.
  • Jolla Phone: clock alert is only played via headphones (if connected) - not at all via loudspeaker. This audio routing error may cause other sound-related problems, too. Apologies. Will be fixed to release 2.2.1.

Known issues specific to Xperia X

  • There are few observations (being investigated) where mobile data cannot be easily turned on after device restart. In such a case force the device to Flight Mode momentarily and back to normal mode. This will reset the modem.
  • [camera] Force autofocus mode for photos, and continuous for video. After this, camera focus is still not ideal - as the camera stays out of focus when it starts until you either tap or try to take a shot - but the pictures seem to be better focused now.
  • Issues with mobile data persist on some SIM cards. Reverting the device to Android and re-installing Sailfish X has helped. See our support article: https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004283713
  • Xperia X does not power up when alarm time has elapsed.
  • Manual network/carrier search lists all networks by the same name (the name of the SIM provider). Use automatic search. If not possible, you need to try several items in the manual search results, unfortunately. The top most item is not necessarily the one that can serve you (still valid with most SIM cards).
  • Bluetooth: Still problems with car equipment, some audio devices and computers.
  • Waking up the device by double-tap does not work.
  • Loudspeaker volume level cannot be adjusted high enough (but echo cancellation was added to the audio path in 2.1.4).
  • Sensors:
    • Not working: barometer, step counter.
    • Compass working in Google Maps, not yet natively.
  • Issues with video playback and video recording (less than before).
  • FM radio missing.
  • Even though all CPU cores get eventually enabled, foreground apps do not always run on the big cores.

Is there specific reason for the download being so slow on Jolla 1, C and Tablet?

Updated Sailfish X and Jolla1, no problems (updated after 18:45 EET). Thank you! :)

My JollaC had duplicate media items in the gallery. After triggering a reindex, the dups were gone again.

The camera complained that the external memory was unavailable. After reselecting the SD card, the issue was gone.

I haven't found other issues yet. Thanks a lot for the great work! :)

@olf, there is no reason for that comma after 'notified', and no reason to lengthen 'don't' into 'do not'.

Yes, more issues for me now @jovirkku

My phone decided on a retry, that the update is now downloaded and ready for installation, but the download was far too quick to have actually downloaded all 300+mb, so now I am in a loop of "Update ready for installation - installing starts (black screen - white bar with sailfishos text) and then I get "There was a problem updating the device - Reboot" - but the phone is frozen, I have to remove the battery to start the phone. Upon returning to Settings/Sailfish OS updates - I am presented with "update ready for installation"......I've been round 3 times and no difference - suggestions please or do I need to reset? (I really don't want to reset if at all possible!) - Help! :(

@Edz: open up a Terminal, and enter the commands:

devel-su

ssu re 2.2.0.29

version --dup

Then just wait until it's done downloading and installing, and reboot!

Everything went finally very smooth and well. Also everything seem to work well. Fingerprint is ok but it does not work as in a sensible way than in original Sony Xperia X did ; You have to press the power buttom a little bit. But good. I am missing a lot double tap but perhaps in the future ... Plus some other thing I have ask for ( but won't speak all the time...).

Another or same issue on 5121: As others write here i have same problems to update my XperiaX

I started downloading right after the "Problem with Store. Could not determine size of update" problem was fixed. The download went fine and I started the installation. My Sailfish X started the updateprocess but after >2hours the progress bar hadn't even started.

At that point I rebooted and the old system came up without a problem. After reding this thread I decidet that maybe the best way was to update throug the console. with "version --dup". The Update went fine and the new system seems to work OK. Saadly the update notifcation is still there and I if I try to search for new updates he is waiting for a connetion for a very long time finds nothing.

Looking in the journal reveals the following messages:

May 31 21:47:41 Sailfish invoker[6103]: invoker: Invoking execution: '/usr/bin/store-client'

May 31 21:47:41 Sailfish [6101]: [D] unknown:0 - System update already in progress. Check request ignored.

...and later...

May 31 21:49:41 Sailfish [6101]: [D] unknown:0 - -- quiting, inactivity timer expired

May 31 21:49:41 Sailfish [6101]: [D] unknown:0 - telling PackageKit daemon to quit

May 31 21:49:41 Sailfish PackageKit[6115]: daemon quit

May 31 21:50:41 Sailfish estart[4296]: [D] unknown:0 - Update check timed out!

I believe that some leftovers of my failed first update are still there and prevent the update check from working.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Best Regards

Sharing via bluetooth is missing as well. And adding another account doesn't change anything. This doesn't only happen in Gallery, but also Notes etc. Not everyone has this issue.

molan ( 2018-05-31 21:19:35 +0300 )edit

SOLUTION: 3rd party plugins made for previous Sfos versions crash the transferengine, therefore no share options are shown. Once you deleted all 3rd party plugins (like Owncloud share, Android share, Pocket share etc.) it should work again.

In case you don't know what plugins you have installed, you find them in /usr/lib/nemo-transferengine/plugins

These are the plugins provided by Jolla (Don't delete them!):

libbluetoothshareplugin.so
libemailshareplugin.so
libmmsshareplugin.so
libtwittershareplugin.so

libdropboxshareplugin.so
libfacebookshareplugin.so
libonedriveshareplugin.so
libvkshareplugin.so

molan ( 2018-06-01 12:16:00 +0300 )edit

Tnx, that fixed the issue for me. However, now I have no option to share images from for example gallery to Android anymore.

yomark ( 2018-06-01 14:54:43 +0300 )edit
1

@yomark you need to wait for third party plugins to be recompiled against this new version (which needs the new SDK to come out first)

leszek ( 2018-06-01 16:00:42 +0300 )edit

I still don't know what I am meant to do to fix this, the comment about 3rd party plugins doesn't seem to explain what I need to do to get this working. Its a bit frustrating at the moment, as I share images from my gallery a fair bit.

Have a small request (i think) for gallery.
would it be possible to have the pathname of multimedia data properties in gallery?
Some apps may produce a lot's of duplicate, and it's not that easy to delete in the right folder...

@jovirkku could you please also add folders to the gallery? in my case I get a total chaotically mix-up of folders everything is lying directly in the main screen and not even sorted by creation date but by last changed date. A folder based view would make things really easy even with wrong sorting of files.

Compass has been broken on most newer devices and a way to get it working has been found but the code needs some cleanup and more testing before it can be included so it's possible we can have a working compass in some release in the near future. Personally I'm interested in the fix because of broken compasses on the community ports of Sailfish OS. Also the Android support probably uses the sensors the normal Android way and that code is not broken but the Sailfish sensor code has some issues.

A lot of devices leave audio jacks behind and connect via bt to everything. And on our device bt is just not working. I love my sailfish, but bt is the one reason that makes it hard to work with the phone as daily driver. This makes me think about flash android back to the device, but i really would like to stick to my lovely Sailfish...

fridl ( 2018-06-01 10:54:41 +0300 )edit

@r0kk3rz would you have a link to the long version? :) Because besides the fact that I don't really talk anymore about Sailfish around me ("What? Still can't use BT and SD cards? lol"), what's annoying is the lack of concrete feedback on issues like that. If it's near to impossible to make it work on the X due to < enter reasons here > but already works perfectly on XA2 because of new HW/Kernel/..., they can't just say it and we'll stop waiting for it.

Same for µSD cards not detected, if there is no plan to upgrade the kernel please just say it and I'll try to find another one, but stop pointing us on this ***** zendesk article :(

It is not easy to convince my friends that having a third operating system is good for the world when I have to borrow android devices just to connect&calibrate my garmin/sport gear. (Due to lack of bluetooth support..)

I do not understand why such basic functionality are not prioritized. A consumer, like myself, just expect these things to work.

I would also appreciate the "long story". Is bluetooth not a standardized technology?

ebjordal ( 2018-06-01 14:51:32 +0300 )edit

In my opinion BT works pretty much perfectly, hard to imagine how other devices would be better?

juiceme ( 2018-06-01 15:28:59 +0300 )edit
4

@Sthocs ok here is the situation: For bluetooth we use a full linux stack with kernel drivers and bluez, and android doesn't.

What this means is that under android, the kernel requires zero support for the BT device because its all handled by libbt+bluedroid, and as such manufacturers don't patch in things that they do not need for their product.

This is compounded by the fact that android also uses old kernels, and so often the BT devices are younger than the kernel release by a few years.

Now in the case of the Xperia X, what it has is a combination Wifi+BT+FM chip and it needs careful balancing so all of these thing work simultaneously, this is why turning off wifi can help with audio stuttering.

With the XA2 they will be using the 4.4 sony kernel, which might not be so bad, and if they wanted they could also rebase the Xperia X adaptation on that kernel if indeed it helps.

r0kk3rz ( 2018-06-01 16:36:24 +0300 )edit

I was also hoping the Bluetooth audio connection would be fixed with this update (as with each update). It's been down for such a long time now, and I used to use it a LOT. To me, and I guess to many others too, this fix is more important than most of the other features in the update.

Always good to see a new update of sailfish with loads of improvements. I have sailfish running on a dual sim Xperia X (5122) since Sailfish X was launched. I used a tweak from talk.meamo.org to make the dual sim to work. How can I make that the Sailfish version for F5122 will install instead of F5121? Is it detected automatically during the update process or do I have to do something special to force the F5122 version of Sailfish to install?

improve dual SIM support by making it more dynamic

I guess you do not need to care about.

I bet you will have to reflash the device once the proper image becomes available.

I found a Hacky way to force my Install to the Dual-SIM Variant, documented here: https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1544880&postcount=2491 This might turn out to be wrong or incomplete, but seems to have worked on my F5122 with no apparent Failures. Use at your own risk, YMMV!

@seiichiro0185, that's the tweak I used., but couldn't find the article so quickly. But if there is an official versin of sailfish X for F5122, that's what I prefer. Therefore my question how to get the F5122 version of Sailfish X

Hi @jollauser. I used the instructions for Windows again and skipped a heap.of steps:

  1. I had a new computer so installed fastboot 2.0
  2. unzip img in 3.0
  3. get Sony binary images 5.0 or follow prompts to copy existing to extracted flash folder
  4. connect phone and flash as per 6.0 Done. Developer Mode takes a while to log into and is noted below by Jolla employee.

1. Developer tools cannot be installed any more after updating to 2.2.0.29 on Xperia X. My Jolla 1 (normal update, no reset) opens developer tools just fine.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Reflash your phone, I broke some stuff that's why I reflashed
  • Open Settings, Developer tools
  • Checking status keeps going, nothing happens

Installing from the terminal is impossible since developer tools is missing :(

EDIT: Using mobile internet I could download the developer tools, the issue stays on WiFi

2. SFOS update notification doesn't goes away

EDIT: After some reboots and app installs it's finally gone

3. Once the fingerprint detector goes into 'Press more firmly' I can never authenticate again with my fingerprint Removing the fingerprint and adding it again let it work again until you hit the 'Press more firmly' thing again.

EDIT: Sliding my finger instead of pressing it against the sensor seems to work better. Maybe it's just me :/

My first try didn't go well either. Got no response from the scanner.

I also can not get the scanner to work. When I try to set it up, I do not get any response from the scanner.

@Dylan Van Assche: There was a change to how the developer mode is enabled after reflashing a device (or after running factory reset). Previously users could sometimes see the annoying message "Problem with Store..." when trying to enable the developer mode. Now this should not happen. However, there is quite a long delay from signing in to one's Jolla account to the moment when installing the developer tools becomes possible. It is just a delay and has nothing to do with the type of Internet access (WLAN vs. mobile data). We will try to shorten the delay in the next OS update(s).

I just installed 2.2.0 on my Sailfish X and everything works fine. Fingerprint takes a while to set up and is not working with my silicon case. If the case is removed, it works fast and solid Thanks guys! I really love the device.
