As i see the starting position is the same as for the Sony Xperia device. Strong separation between hardware and software responsibility. Both companies allow (welcome) installing other OSes on there devices - but you have to reinstall the original (Android) OS to get support from the hardware company.

The community build for the Fairphone2 is nearly perfect (including dual sim support) - a BIG THANKS to mal for all the work and time spending on the port :-).

But with out the foreign license software.

The licencing and sell modalities for the SailfishX could be the same for the Sony and Fairphone device (including restrictions to incompatible hardware changes).

So the early problem who is responsible if an error occurs is solved with the sony deal and can also be done with fairphone.

I would spend my missing Tablet refund (second part) buying a license for my fairphone2 :-) ..

As valid a question as any, I would like to know why Fairphone, Oneplus, Nexus 4 & 5 and all those fully functional community ports are not considered for official licensing. A good explanation mainly from official channels would be really nice

@DameCENO Nexus 4 has functional community port but it is old version 2.0.5.6 of SailfishOS, which even most native apps doesn't support anymore (because of Qt 5.2 vs Qt 5.6).

They did not achieve an agreement about support and some other stuff (Money and personal resources is alwas a gamestoper here). Fairphone being a starup like Jolla has also low personal and monetary resources to get this done. A second round of talks would be nice, maybe then something would come out!

The difference ia that with Sony phones Jolla does all the heavy work by them selves (with the support of the open device program). With Fairphone the Fairphone company would/could assist and work on the h/w adaptation together with Jolla, perhaps making Jolla's required work minimal. We would still be required to buy a Sailfish license for our Fairphones.

@Mohjive yeah Fairphone aren't experts in porting sailfish, and Jolla are, the end result is Jolla tends to do all the heavy work anyway.

The main argument was around whether or not Fairphone should pay Jolla for the work + licensing costs

Idea for Fairphone is great but I wonder how the OS can support all the changeable hardware components. It might take a lot of time to prepare for all new components.

Currently this is true but I understand that in future they hope to have additional options. Every new component would require attention from Jolla. I would love to see Sailfish on this device but we shall see.

you still hope for new hardware 2,5 years later?

im not super informed about the fairphone project, but from what ive heard, there wont be any more upgrades for the fairphone 2. some speculate about a fairphone 3 rather than any upgrades...

but anyway, for now this should be a problem...

Both camera modules are supported by mals port. I did not belive that Fairphone will change a lot or build newer (incompatible) modules. The must support them by there own Android versions they deliver and i think they will think twice about newer modules. Only if they did not get old components for the available parts they must change the modules.

Now Fairphone2 is out of stock (and will never be produced again - as i know). So the question for Fairphone2 is obsolet. I close it.
