I searched and found many questions having to do with recovery, so maybe duplicate, but I didn't really see an answer, plus these things do change over time... As someone who tends to do a lot of modifying and chance-taking with my phone, I find myself having to wipe/reset/reflash somewhat regularly. On Android, it's not such such a big deal, because of the way recovery works. You flash a recovery img, or a kernel with recovery, and any time you're about to do something potentially hazardous, you just boot to recovery and do a quick backup. If your mod goes wrong, you just boot to recovery and restore. I think I see that you can only get into sfos recovery with a computer, (right?). I did make a backup through the backup function in Settings one time, just to test, but when I went to restore it, I got a 'unable to read, (or something like that)' error. I haven't gotten atound to testing the recovery partition yet, (although I did find hybris-recovery img in /boot, which I think you can fastboot), because I am hardly ever at a computer, (which is also the reason why I wish I could do it on my phone). So how does the recovery work? Any chance of getting an on-device recovery any time soon? I have Xperia X Compact, sf 2137 community port. thanks

FYI you can flash the recovery image to the hardware with "fastboot flash recovery hybris-recovery.img, so you don't need to fastboot it each time, then you can enter it when the phone is powered off by holding power + vol down. To exit, power + vol up.

As far as "how it works", you need a computer so you can telnet over the USB network. I've only needed it once, and that was because I wanted to resize the volume groups... and I do a LOT of tinkering.

since original post, I've used recovery a few times, and found it very helpful. One question - when accessing shell and browsing file system, I found that /home directory is empty, (no /nemo or /lost+found directory). All other directories, including sdcard, were accessible. Any idea why, or how to add it? Maybe it's as simple as mounting /dev/block/mmcblk(whatever), but I didn't bother messing around with it, since I was able to do what I needed by modifying the file I was hoping to replace, (I had backed up a file to experiment on a modification, which failed, so I wanted to replace my modded file with the backup. I ended up just undoing my modifications with vi instead)... Thanks

With my XA2plus, fastboot aborts and tells me "No such partition".
