I just received my brand new Jolla yesterday. The first thing I tried to do was to update the software to the latest version but I ran into some trouble there:

  1. The device does not pop up a notification about available updates. The device has been running and connected to WLAN for hours.

  2. The Check for Updates option in the About product menu starts checking for updates: the line “Updates” reads “Checking...” and the circle keeps rolling around but nothing ever happens. The device has been in this state for hours.

  3. I cannot activate the developer mode and try the “pkcon install store-client && pkill store-client” mentioned in various sources like [1] because also there the circle just keeps rolling and nothing ever happens. (I assume that it also tries to download some packages.)

The symptoms are very similar to what was described in http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92087. However, my repos should be “sales” as I haven't been able to activate the developer mode (and at least I cannot access command line to run the specified commands). Time on my Jolla was a couple of minutes behind, so I manyally set it based on my PC's clock that is synced from internet ntp servers. Then I rebooted and tried checking for updates. No effect.

I have factory reset the device three times, and did nothing (except enabling and connecting to WLAN) prior to trying to check for updates. I initially tried checking for updates yesterday and then again today to make sure it's not about overloaded servers, etc.

I also tried static IP configuration including DNS server addresses. (This was mentioned somewhere on talk.maemo.org, I think.) No effect.

According to my firewall / router, the device does NOT even have any TCP nor UDP / IP sessions. Also Jolla's data counters show 0/0 kB over WLAN. The browser can connect to internet, and I can browse e.g. google.fi and hs.fi (and in this case my router does show TCP sessions with destination port 80). Also my laptop naturally has no issues connecting to internet through the same WLAN AP.

My OS version is 1.0.0.5, which it had out-of-the-box.

Is there a way to fix this myself, or do I just need to contact care@jolla.com?

P.S. In order to even get Jolla connected to WLAN, I had to turn off encryption (WPA2-PSK; and just use MAC address filtering to avoid making it wide open). With encryption, Jolla wouldn't connect at all. But this workaround is good enough until I get the Jolla OS updated.

P.P.S. I don't have a SIM card in the phone yet as my old one is mini-SIM and I'm also switching operator. I assume this shouldn't have anything to do with OS update.

P.P.P.S. I also skipped signing into Jolla account because that didn't work either. I got "Oops problem with account creation" when trying to sign in with my existing account that I had already created online earlier. Assuming that this is not needed either for an OS update.

I changed the tag to system-update, as update is reserved for release notes of Sailfish updates.

I would try with a sim card.. and also think you need a jolla account enabled on your device for the store and repos to work.

You are able to browse the internet, but apparently didn't have a connection to the update servers?

Can you ping?

$ ping 8.8.8.8

Does you DNS resolve? (enter any internet address you never been with your device, so that it doesn't use cached DNS results)

$ ping google.com

Does this work:

$ pkcon refresh

yes there is a foolish issue that have the store and this bug is cured with the first update. the same for me when a week ago i recovered the phone and i had trouble to update for this matter. you have to try to download again again again since it works..

in my opinion when you recover system the OS must be remain on the last firmware like in harmattan PR1.3 that remain such after a recovery...

As jovirkku stated, signing in to a Jolla account seems to be a mandatory prerequisite. I finally succeeded in signing in, and the update started working immediately.

Disabling the "Check for updates" option in the About product menu when not signed in would have helped but this is just a minor improvement opportunity. As long as you complete the startup wizard including the Jolla account creation or sign in, there will be no problem with updates.

Another thing, which would have prevented the problem, would be to have the manual / guide explicitly state the need for Jolla account in order to get updates. Now the guide only says:

Jolla Account You need this to get apps from the Jolla Store. [...]
