Hi all,
WeChat is my only manner to stay in touch with a few friends. But as of today, I can't use it anymore. A new privacy policy requires to update to the latest WeChat version. I found the apk for version 6.6.7, but can't install it since it requires Android SDK version 17 (mine is currently 16 apparently). How could I update this on my Jolla 1?

In short, you can't.
Jolla is hoping on bringing out an updated version of alien-dalvik, but since the Jolla Phone doesn't have the current latest I'm not sure it will apply.
@jpelfrene If you get an Xperia X you normally can run WeChat since it runs AlienDalvik with Android 4.4.4 while the Jolla 1 still has AlienDalvik with Android 4.0. Jolla will deliver the updated AlienDalvik this year apparently.

Yup, I'll do the same and wait for OS3. Got a spare Android phone now just to run Wechat. And since the Jolla 1 has been my first and only smartphone up until now, the amount of data collection and background up- and downloads by Google came as a shocker. Hoping the best for Sailfish to come through as a viable alternative, but its functionality is unfortunately still coming short on a few key points.

Since the WeChat 7.0.x release, the app no longer works on Xperia X devices. Even when as root, running pkill com.tencent.mm and systemctl restart aliendalvik.service no longer works. When opening the app, it's not possible to pass the opening screen (see attached image).
That means the XA2 is the only remaining device that can run WeChat.
i have running version 7.0.3 (Xperia X) its pain to start it up (was tickling with android support on/off while starting) but it's possible 😎 for now i don't close it (always running)

WeChat 6.6.7 seems to be available in the Aptoide Store:
As you can see, I'm using 6.6.6 and the app has notified me of the available update. It's not possible to update to 6.6.7 from within the app (it never has been) so just install the latest from Aptoide.
It appears that you are not able to update the Android SDK version by yourself. I also have the same issue (https://together.jolla.com/question/186953/) on the Xperia X with another app (using 19 and requiring 21). Coincidentally, I've seen a lot of outdated Android SDK topics being raised over the past few days so it seems that app authors are finally deprecating support for older versions (perhaps due to security issues or other platform-related problems).
