I've recently come across a mail chat app called "delta chat" on F-Droid. Mail chat means that email conversations are conditioned/layouted by an app so they look like a messenger chat (like whatsapp, threema etc.).

I loved it as it is an open source project and it is open standard (concerning the app), i.e. does not require people having the same app. They can just stay with their mail program or another app doing mail chat, e.g. Mailtime (which I didn't try). No need for a phone number, no address book upload. Additionaly it features end-to-end-encryption, key handling and key sharing via QR-Codes.

All in all this app/technique seems what messenging should be like in a "better" internet.

Long introduction, now the question: Is there anything similar as native Sailfish app? AlienDalivk apps tend to have notification issues or delays due to the lack of push-notifications.

This sonds like the idea I had some time ago; to leverage the existing e-mail infrastructure as basis of an instant messaging system.

Usng imap as the transport mechanism avoids creating dedicated-server network; the system would automatically form federated distribution system and no need to create any new accounts as email address would suffice as user handle.

Nice to know that great ideas form up in different heads the same way :)

It sounds like sorting emails by threads. Not working with native email app.

I also thought about this concept some time ago. Great to see it's really a thing. Would love a native app. I agree, this is what should have happened before whatsapp. It would have obsoleted it and everything would be good...

DeltaChat is planned for Android and iOS (soon), but the Android version from F-Droid works flawlessly with Jolla 1 (tested), Jolla C and Sony "X".

Set notifications in "/usr/share/lipstick/androidnotificationpriorities"

Add 2 lines:

Delta Chat;chat,chat_exists

package:com.b44t.messenger;chat,chat_exists

An official native app for SFOS is not planned and a port is not in sight.

Have Fun

I do really like the concept of Delta Chat and would like to know if there is some work going on for a SFOS port?

I saw that in their forum there is interest in Sailfish OS. https://support.delta.chat/t/dc-and-sailfish-os/270 I would like to see co-operation.

It should be possible to use the Delta Chat Core C-API to create native applications.

Either by staticaly linking the C-library on the C++ side of Qt or using the Python bindings on the QML side.
