I installed pi-hole in my local network and so i found out that my phone is constantly doing a DNS look up of ipv6.jolla.com and ipv4.jolla.com . Does anyone know the reason for that? Am I able to avoid that behavior when I am not at home?

Thanks!

I'm hoping that Jolla will give us an option to disable these pings or at least let us change the target (so I can use my own server) for a long time now.

Re using your own server: If it has a static IP address, couldn't you "redirect" ipv4.jolla.com via /etc/hosts, like people do to make newer search engines work in old browsers? Of course, your server would have to mimic whatever the jolla servers do when the phone does a connection test. You will need more wiresniffing to determine this, but it seems doable if you are determined.

SFOS seems to use ipv4.jolla.com to check the connection.

The question how to avoid this behaviour has already been filed here: https://together.jolla.com/question/153129/how-to-avoid-wlan-connection-check/

Thank you. But then my question would be ... why? Why would the phone need to check every few minutes whether it's online or not?

I guess it is so the phone can quickly detect WLAN going out of range, and switch back from costly mobile connection once WLAN is availabe again. It requires a real connection attempt/roundtrip to be sure WLAN is usable, because public ones are often restricted, requiring login/payment before use. This frequent check results in better connectivity for time critical applications, e.g. push email and messengers.

I wouldn't know of another way of checking the connection's quality, and I'm convinced that using a jolla host for this purpose is the best solution.
