Why is it not possible to boot a new XperiaX kernel without flashing it?

During development and testing It would be handy to run up a new kernel by loading&booting it with "fastboot boot hybris-boot.img", without flashing it as a permanent kernel.
However I noticed that a kernel that works very well when flashed with "fastboot flash boot hybris-boot.img" hangs when I try to load it without permanent flashing.
My setup is official-license XperiaX running 2.2.0.29 and I build the boot image with initramfs extracted from the original kernel (not the community initramfs)
