[Xperia X] "Prefer 4G" does not really prefer 4G
Since a few weeks I have been able to add 4G to my Vodafone plan. I have noticed that at some point the phone stops connecting to 4G altogether, but only switches between 2G and 3G, even if 4G signal is present and stronger than the other two. This happens after a while, typically hours. Switching plane mode on and off does not cure the issue, but a power cycle is required. I could suspect it's a network issue but if this were the case plane mode should solve it. I am currently on 2.2.0. When 4G works and I make a call, the phone falls back correctly to 2G/3G and restores 4G immediately after the end of the call.
Update 17 August 2018: It looks like that if the phone loses 4G connection due to poor signal it is never restored. I used my Xperia X as a hotspot in a place where there is a single place where I can barely get signal. Once reached 4G connection it could be held for hours, but if I moved the phone slightly the signal was lost and never recovered, switching instead to 2G or 3G. It also appears that a simple reset cannot fix the issue, or at least not always; a power cycle always works. Bottom line, this is not a usable condition. The year of free updates is expiring and we are left with a barely usable system with extremely serious problems in a basic function such as telephony.
I have had a similar problem with the hallon operator (cheaper version of 3 in Sweden). It seems to happen where the signal is poor. Sometimes the rate is very good, although the 3G symbol shows. Sometimes it's very slow, and a reboot restores 4G.

This embarassing trick works for my XperiaX (but only sporadically for jolla1, JollaC).
rtr2001 ( 2018-08-20 20:17:42 +0300 )editguys please give "4g only" setting......its annoying to play bitween network modes....
Lalit ( 2018-08-21 10:00:46 +0300 )editAnyway, the switch-back-and-forth trick does not work for me.
Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2018-08-21 21:41:29 +0300 )editWe are waiting from indivuduals network modes since years and years .. But Jolla doesn't care .. Ask them .. They will probably say something like " It's maybe related to your operator " " Send us logs " or " Only 4G doesn't receive calls "
malibu1106 ( 2018-08-23 12:01:47 +0300 )editYes, in 4G only mode you would lose SMS and voice calls.
slava ( 2018-08-27 19:39:31 +0300 )editNot if we had VoLTE support.
Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2018-08-27 21:30:37 +0300 )editbut network mode automatically changes to 3G/2G if you are getting the voice call
Lalit ( 2018-08-28 09:15:26 +0300 )editIn my case, only calls are not possible in 4G, SMS are working sometimes, sometimes not and the phone goes back to 3G.
The most problematic is that sometimes i've to wait for a very long time to recover the 4G, even if the signal is best than in 3G.
In the past, Coderus made a patch for that, and it was working well, only 4G, with no trouble and no need to try for hours to find 4G when the phone doesn't want. I'm pretty sure the issue is full software located.
So long time i'm waiting for this .. When the jolla team will do it, my phone will probably be died. o/
