Hello,

I use the Finnish keyboard a lot (along the English one), and I type fast. That means my touches are not the most accurate. This results in the following:

  1. Start typing using Finnish layout (the middle row is "full-size" with "a" right at screen edge)
  2. Type so fast that some "a" presses get interpreted as an edge swipe
  3. Type quickly the next letter in the right half of the keyboard
  4. The OS detects this as a fast edge swipe and proceeds with it
  5. Find yourself in Events view and wonder what just happened

This can be achieved with any key right at the left border ("q", "a" and Shift in Finnish) or right border ("å", "ä" and Backspace in Finnish) followed by some key at the opposite half of the keyboard.

My suggestion is that when the keyboard is visible, the edge swipe would be disabled over the keyboard area, but would still act as normal when done above the keyboard.

There is a logic to support this. Let's assume you are writing something in an app (say, an SMS message) and you are in the middle of writing whatever you are writing. During the writing, or more precisely, during writing two letters on the keyboard, what is the reason to edge swipe instead? What use case would benefit from being able to edge swipe from the keyboard during letter writing? I find it hard to come up with an example.

I have accidentally done this twice today, and I have long since lost count. It seems my Xperia X book case also affects it a bit, but in the end - in my opinion - it is a series of taps misinterpreted as an edge swipe. I am not sure about this, but I think I haven't come across this with my Jolla Phone or community-ported Fairphone 2, only with Xperia X (with official build).

Edit: I also run into a different issue with edge swipe far more often: The near-edge-press is interpreted as a beginning of a edge swipe, and the animation starts, making the keyboard unresponsive until the animation is finished. This is very common to me, so I really can't tell how I didn't mention this right away.

TJC, what do you think about this? Jolla, could you give this a thought? Thanks!

It would make sense also to disable edge swipe for swipe keyboard support. We already have OKboard and I can imagine this to be developed further.

I find it the other way around, that it’s harder to make an edge swipe over the keyboard area. There are many more times I fail to do an edge swipe there, than I accidentally begin an edge swipe while typing.

@Mohjive What device do you have? I have difficulties to close an application and have to do it reeeally slow for the first centimeter or so. I think it's the touch filter that does it, but I can live with that :)

This still messes up my writing in 3.0.3...
