I am working in Tanzania bringing my long awaited new Jolla phone back after Christmas vacation. Unfortunately I have had to revert back to my trustworthy Nokia N9 for daily use, because the Jolla phone in many situations is almost impossible to use in bright outdoor light. The nice color variations in for example the People app, makes it impossible to distinguish between two contacts with the same first name, because I cannot read the last name, which is shown with a darker color and lower brightness. I admit it looks nice indoor, but that is not good to me when I cannot see what I need to see in bright sunlight. I have experimented with all the preloaded Jolla ambiances using highest back light setting and tried to create my own using bright photos, but in vain.

A solution could be if Jolla would create a Black & White/High contract ambiance for these situations, which shows all text in bold and in one color only being either white on black background or black on white background.

I hope the Jolla team can find time in their busy schedule to create such an ambiance and make it available either in the store or on the website as download. Other than that I thank the team for its hard work and brilliant phone OS.

One more. I've been in this situation this morning.

I would like to have an Ambience contrast switch (low/normal/high) in settings also for other reasons.

As a short term solution you can adjust the text colors manually as written in Black and white ambiences.

I think with the current Jolla hardware the only proper solution is the option to have an inverted color scheme (black on white).

Compare these two screenshots in bright daylight:

Hi ssahla!

Have you actually managed to create an Ambiance for the second option or this image was generated by a Gimp/PS/whatever?

If you have this ambiance would not mind to share with us?

Thank you in advance!

@martonmiklos, sadly, it's just a Photoshop mockup...

Thank you ssahla! It is so sad that this issue has not been addressed for a while...

A future update will have better contrast (i.e. less transparency) in the secondary colours, which helps legibility in daylight considerably.

It wont do any good. Just took mine Jolla to Alps and it's totally unusable outside. Reverse colors with Bold(er) font please. Had WP before and that had good colors.

A lighter background with a dark font would be good!

The mar14 update (1.0.4.20) went a small way only to the final solution! We need dark on light (including black on white) themes/settings!

I'm a fan of black themes with white text. I just looked at another thread, describing how to change highlight colours/secondary highlights, see https://together.jolla.com/question/11949/black-and-white-ambiences/

I used an all black 'wallpaper' and then ran one line in terminal;

gconftool-2 -s /desktop/jolla/theme/color/highlight -t string '#ffffff'

@Markkyboy:For a black-on-white theme, there are 2 problems with it:

  • This change is temporary only, i.e. as soon as you change the Ambience you have to repeat the Terminal command (actually: Terminal commands, because you would have to define secondary highlight and probably other colors as well, but this could be done with a script file).
  • The current Ambience system darkens all Ambience background colors. Therefore, you do not get a 100% white background, but only something like 40 ... 60% gray, i.e. you cannot get the highest contrast, only max. 60% (or even less) of it.

By the way: With a pure black Ambience wall paper, the highlight color seems to be white anyway, so no need for a terminal command.

The request is still not satisfied: We need a true black on white theme!
