System-wide Android ad blockers

Apparently, in Android there are a number of systems to block ads inside Android apps; see e.g. https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-ad-blocking-t3218167 . Some of them require root, some don't; from what I understand, they mostly work with by altering the DNS.

Has anyone tried blocking Android ads inside Jolla phones? I suppose these methods won't work inside Aliendalvik, since they play heavily with the Anroid network stack?

I would suggest that you look at pihole for example, so you can protect the whole network from adware

Well it's a phone, it's not going to be on the same network all the time. And most of the time it's going to be connected to mobile network directly. So pihole seems dubious.

Except when it's a hotspot. I want to run pihole on my Xperia so my famiys iPads aren'tinfested with ads.

Yes, ca. 2 years ago.

While I have not looked at the suggestions on XDA-dev you linked to, some Proxy-based and "hosts file"-based Android ad-blocking apps do work.

But since Defender exists, there is no reason to use these, as Defender nicely filters all network accesses (regardless, if originating from a native or Android app) and eases selecting and updating filter lists (among them the MVPS-list, which @jollajo mentioned).

Additionally you may use plugins for Fennec or Firefox, if you happen to use one of them under AlienDalvik.

Actually I use the filter list provided by http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ to modify /etc/hosts, /system/etc/hosts, and /opt/alien/system/etc/hosts. This protects me from ads in firefox. I hardy use other apps that show adverts, so not sure whether it works globally for Android. Tapatalk still shows ads, however those seem to be injected by tapatalk directly.
