Cannot restore backup in Nurmonjoki (2.2.1)

I made a backup to the SD card before updating to 2.2.1, but the update failed and I had to reset to factory settings. After I updated the phone all over again, it worked all the way to 2.2.1. But now I can't restore my backup, because the Settings UI has a button saying "update your backup" instead of "restore backup" or something similar.

How can I restore my SD card backup? Is there a command-line version?

also, the backup is a plain .tar archive.

you could directly access it to salvage your data.

if you're not a nig lìnux command line interface user, 7zip has a nice GUI for handling those.

I already opened the archive to retrieve some phone numbers and notes that I needed urgently, but I was hoping for a command that would restore the entire backup given the .tar file.

That, or a button to restore backups, which I thought should be in Settings, but isn't.

I eventually solved it. So, after my initial factory reset and full updates, I did the following:

  • Deleted ~/.vault from the device memory
  • Deleted anything that looked like ~/.vault from my SD card (I had copied the entire home folder to the card, longer ago)
  • Deleted all backups except for the most recent one from the SD card (i.e. I kept the file sailfish_backup_2018-09-26T13-45-34Z.tar and deleted all other ones from the card)
  • Went to the Settings UI > Backup, then tapped the button "Update your backup", which started a spinner (NOT the restoring backup spinner; another one instead, which replaced this button)
  • Waited ~15 minutes. According to top, the phone was running its tracker on the SD card.
  • After the time passed, the proper "Restore" button appeared and I could update the phone normally from my desired backup.

How to see "Update your backup" button? I don't have it, I have a few backups on my SD card though.

I didn't know why there was an "Update your backup" button. But I think it's because the phone was just reset and there was no tracker information. Apparently, after indexing all the pictures, music and *.tar files on the SD card, the phone could see where the backups were and the "Restore" button came back.
