Xperia XA2 supported versions

Hi! All version of Xperia XA2 including Ultra and Plus have almost identical internals. Can we finally get information which devices will be supported by Sailfish X?

I do not require release date, I know software development takes time, but I really need to know which versions I should be looking for.

Please keep in mind Xperia XA2 Plus not only looks more sleek and modern, but it is a newer device and presumably will be available for longer when standard XA2 and XA2 Ultra will be discontinued in the next few months.

As far as I know the XA2 is the prime version they start with regarding support SFOS 3, maybe plus or ultra will follow in a later stadium.

Well, as far as I know the only differences are: dual front camera in Xperia XA2 ultra, higher display resolution in Xperia XA2 Plus and probably different audio DAC. It should be very easy to create a Sailfish X release for Xperia XA2 Ultra and Plus.

There are rumours about Xperia XA3 coming soon (CES 2019), so the basic Xperia XA2 maybe discontinued in the next few months.

To be realistic, you will not get an official answer for that beyond what James Noori commented in the Jolla Blog:

The XA2 Dual SIM (H4113) and the XA2 Single SIM (H3113) will be supported. We are considering expanding to other XA2 variants and we will update details separately as we start the sales.

and questioned about the XA2 Plus due to hardware similarities:

No news as of yet, but because of the reason you mentioned, there is a possibility of us supporting it as well. This is not a confirmation, so I advise you to wait until we release Sailfish 3 for the XA2 and announce the final range of devices.

You will have to wait at least until SF3 release date, probably longer, for further announcements.

Edit: here is the "further annoucement":

Beginning from November 8, 2018, support for all single and dual variants of XA2, XA Plus and XA Ultra is given.

Maybe we can reopen that in a month :)

That is my point. We need reliable answer from development team before SF3 is released. Sony Xperia XA2 will be replaced soon, so should we purchase our new phones as soon as possible or can we patiently wait and but Xperia XA2 Plus later?

@charles "I want a reliable answer" would be more accurate. But you will not get it (most probably). Insisting doesn't change anything, sorry for that. Just don't buy a phone before SF3 release.

edit: Xperia X was also discontinued before Salifish X release, yet it is still available in shops.

"We (the community) deserve the reliable answer" would be even more accurate. Sailfish depends on the community and most of us do not ask much in return, but definitely announcement of supported XA2 versions would be welcome.

Xperia X was near end of life when the Sailfish X was announced, but there was no immediate successor, so Xperia X was available for some time longer. Sony Xperia XA2 is already succeeded by the XA2 Plus and XA3 is coming soon.

Sailfish X community program update

Next week, on November 8 we introduce Sailfish X support for various Sony Xperia XA2 models. Sony Xperia XA2 devices are great hardware additions to the Sailfish X program, and I’m happy to share that we’ll start the support for all the product variants from the very beginning – including all single and dual SIM models. Below are all the variants you can choose from. See more product details on Sony’s products page.

You know guys, for me there is one problem. The people at Jolla don't know what we want. I made an entry about the plus variant. Here are thousands of users but only a few of you were voting/commenting on it. Maybe one at Jolla reads it and thinks "ah plus variant, oh only a few want it, why should we adapt SFOS if only 10 peolpe would want it"

James stated it precisely, only XA2 and considering other devices. If nobody really want other devices they may just start with another project. And they have many aside of Sony devices. Licensing to Jala, Inoi, partnerships in Russia, China and and and...

I also prefer the Plus, coz it's the newest and probably the one that is supported the longest plus some other benefits. But here is no straight line. The old Meego gang still want 4' displays, the other side doesn't care about the phone as long they can mod the system so it has to be cheap.

For me, I want SFOS in a phone with good specs and nice design. The trend is bigger displays so I have to adjust and accept what we get but also fighting for what I want. SFOS is great and I don't wanna use another OS. But I wanna have the decision on what device I use it.

So Jolla, support all the variants. It will never ever be more simple to extend the range of devices powered by SailfishOS.

i think they should support for all XA2 variants. simply because it makes it easier for novices. is all versiona are supported there is no "oh you need this special version". makes it for many people a lot easier / less confusion.. they should have done this with the Xperia X already, but i understand this was a new idea back then. now they should have learned from the issues with the X and support all versions of the XA2.

If you are right and developers at Jolla do not know what we need, let them know here and now!

We want to use Sailfish on modern, nice and sleek devices. We use Sailfish mainly, because we abhor iOS and Android, not because we are poor. If we were poor, we could not afford the Sailfish licence.

If we are not poor, we do not want to feel ashamed using outdated or ugly devices, therefore we want Sailfish for the best Sony phones from Open Device Program. At this moment, it is XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus range.
