I would like to use duckduckgo in the browser on my Sailfish OS phone. If I check the community pages, it tells me that this is now part of an upgrade, but my phone only has options for Google, Yahoo, Bing, and another, but not duckduckgo; please advise

I would appreciate the option to select DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. This is currently not possible. If you a developer you could contribute to the default browser, that is open source.

I use a kind of workaround by defining the DuckDuckGo.com as the default web page, that is opened in a new tab. I anyway use always for privacy reasons the private mode. If I open the browser, DuckDuckGo is shown.

Go to the system settings, select accounts and then the browser. Here you can enter the default webpage.

Install the package with additional search engines, created by @coderus:

Search engines for Sailfish Browser

If you haven't seen it before, please have a look at Storemanfor installing packages from openrepos.net.

Please have look at https://together.jolla.com/question/4959/add-more-search-engines-to-the-web-browser/. Step by step guide is there. It works for me. Please use search before posting questions

Thank you so much for the guidance. I installed Storeman from the rpm download. The search engines package was visible in Storeman, but I could not install from there - there was a message saying it was refreshing the cache, but that didn't go away, so I downloaded the rpm from OpenRepos and installed as I had the storeman rpm, and changed the settings for the browser. It worked. In answer to the other person - I did search before posting the question (as is indicated in my question)

One way to add DuckDuckGo is oneliner in CLI:

devel-su curl https://duckduckgo.com/opensearch.xml -o /usr/lib/mozembedlite/chrome/embedlite/content/duckduckgo.xml

The code does not execute without permission (devel-su), I've updated the answer to reflect this comment.

I can confirm this does add DuckDuckGo to 'search engine' options in Settings/Apps/Browser

Do I need to remove this setting when upgrading my system to the next version like is recommended for patches?

@Rikujolla - it should be okay, instinct tells me it will either survive update or simply be overwritten.

If you want to be totally sure, you could simply do this to remove the entry;

devel-su rm /usr/lib/mozembedlite/chrome/embedlite/content/duckduckgo.xml

I left it in place since first release without any issues so far.
