How much Google is in SFOS?

Hi there!

The main reason for me to buy a Jolla phone was to buy an European phone, plus Jolla's commitment to privacy. For one or the other reason I had to look behind the GUI and found several times the word google popping up. There are processes running having google in their name and I recently I saw this:

[D] unknown:0 - ProfileManager::syncProfile( "google.Signon" )
[D] unknown:0 - found a valid sync profile with the given name: "google.Signon"

So I was wondering how much google software is build in Sailfish and what impact this could have regarding privacy.

Before I can answer this, I have to ask you the following: 1st do you have android support enabled or not? 2nd did you add a google account?

I believe I have android support enabled since I am using two android apps and no, I do not have a google account.

its your prize for running android apps. try to go native, or use the browser.

Actually this is part of my question. What is the price? Does activating android support mean that my phone will send information to google services? I am not a programmer and I never looked into the "open source" code provided by google. Does using a "free" google script automatically mean that you share information with google?

Android and Google are not the same. You can have an Android device without any Google on it - e.g. AOSP or Lineage OS. Even the in Sailfish currently still underlying framework AlienDalvik for Android - nothing to do by default with Google.

My bet is the above piece is very likely to be associated with adding a google account for mail - there you need signin to log into Google. Makes sense to me.

Your google.signon finding must have to do with a google account. Either mail or XMPP or anything else (calendar sync?). I don't have any of those and so for me a

devel-su journalctl -fa | grep -e google -e android

Doesn't show any entry in a reasonable observation period.

Without Android support started the following

ps ax | awk '{print $5}' | sort | uniq | grep -e googl -e android

Only shows:

/usr/bin/android-notifications

(an app installed from openrepos)

With enabled android support

ps ax | awk '{print $5}' | sort | uniq | grep -e googl -e android

Shows:

/usr/bin/android-notifications

android.process.acore

android.process.media

com.android.phone

com.android.providers.calendar

com.android.systemui

I do not have any google account. I am not using any google service like mail, calendar, doc or any other service. I see this entries when my calendar updates. I use an OwnCloud calendar and Sync it via CalDav.
