I am finding it difficult to browse through my photos. I have over 5000 pictures in SD separated in different folders by dates and events. So when every picture is shown in one view finding something is virtually impossible. Previous phones' galleries were able to separate pics by folder. Main view in current Gallery could be as is IMO but in Photos pics could be shown by album.

Also it would be great to be able to create own folders and move photos into them..

I'm amazed this is so low down on the list of priorities - folder support at the top level of the gallery is a MUST!

I'm wondering that there where no quality managment in the team to recognize that defect

I copy/backup my phone photos semi-regularly over USB. And it currently takes a long time just to bring up all the files in the folder (I have 2000+ photos), it would be very handy to split the captured photos into folders (eg. 2014-07, 2014-08, etc)

In addition to Folder Views, an option should be available to limit which folders Gallery scans for images... I don't really want all my AlbumArt for music appearing in my photo gallery!

Agree this is a pin but you can embed album art in the MP3 file and then delete all the album art that appears in the Gallery

Maybe this is a solution for album arts, but nonetheless I agree with roboro, because if I have a folderview I need to define the folders whose pictures I wish to see in gallery.

Someone should make a 'tracker configuration' application for this purpose. Like Tracker Cfg N900.

There is a separate question/feature request for this option! please head over there and vote for it! https://together.jolla.com/question/2257/exclude-folders-from-gallery/

Of course, like a "private" option

I suggest to use folders in the camera app as well, for example one folder per month. Browsing through one huge folder takes very long time, even via usb.

Of course, I do agree, having nearly 3000 pics sorted by folder and..in the Jolla it's..a bit of a mess.

In the meantime you can use the acv pic viewer from f-droid.org. It is very customisable and has the option to open a pic from a chosen folder

Also, pictures are not sorted accordingly. It seems to me that pictures are sorted not by Exif Date and Time but by creation date of the file itself. Very annoying if you copy old photos by SSH to the phone, because creation date doesn't remain. At least there should be an option to sort by Exif Date and Time. By that, one could also filter by Year, Month, etc ...

wouldn't scp -p do the trick to retain file creation date when transferring via ssh?

barral ( 2014-12-22 12:51:24 +0300 )edit

That is correct, yes. It seems the file creation dates were already screwed up. :-( Anyway, it would be really nice to have different options for sorting. Sorting by Exif data would be nice, though. Creation dates can get lost on copying between camera to NAS, from NAS to phone or from CD/DVD to PC to phone ... and so on ;-)

ditto that nuisance, every time to move or copy images around you dont want to change the chronological position in the gallery.

BUMP!

A reminder that this is still not at all implemented..after quite long request time. If you look at Whatsapp how it simply shows pictures you want to add to a chat in a folder view this would be already enough to "survive" this chaotical folder mix up we have now.

Also I realized that moving pictures from internal memory to sd card seems to influence the sorting order of the pictures in the gallery pictures are shown based on last change date instead of creation date. I have pictures that are more than 2 years old that now show up before others that are just couple of months old, the only explanation i have is that I moved the older ones to the sd card recently.

I've seen the same behaviour regarding sorting order and it's extremely frustrating because it's impossible to find any picture unless you like scrolling through a thousand miniatures one by one to find it.

It should be possible to give custom tags to pictures and videos in Jolla regardless where the files originate from. The Gallery could then let user to browse and view contents by providing a tag cloud view in the top-level and/or an option to search pictures/videos based on tag criteria. Tags or keywords could also be provided and implemented as an organizational criteria for pictures/videos in addition to Albums and Folders.

I agree. I think tags give more freedom than folders because pictures can have multiple tags and tags can still be used to simulate folders. JPEG images support storing tags ("keywords") inside the image files, and there is good support for reading these in other software as well. The anatomy of tagging JPEG images is documented here: https://beckustech.wordpress.com/2013/03/12/tagging-jpeg-image-files/

Stepchild Gallery App

Development Roadmap

February: Update main view of Gallery app for Tablet

March: Option to move photos and media from internal memory to SD card

August: Adapt Gallery, Media player and Maps layouts for Tablet; Design album support for Gallery app

-> None of the features concerning photos that were planned for this year is implemented till now.

This feature request was originally posted two years ago. Meanwhile it has got approximately 400 votes.

So, Jolla, if you had enough air to breathe after having recently bypassed the third Death Valley, I would really like to ask you to give this feature a higher priority now, please. :-)

To my mind, there are good reasons to do so:

  1. increased usability with benefits for a wide majority of your customers: Although Smartphone owners differ a lot from each other regarding their usage of the phone, there are some basic features that are used by almost everyone. The camera and gallery app surely belong to them.
  2. privacy: Jolla stands (not only) for pricacy. Helping users to avoid unintentionally presenting the wrong picture that is only one swipe away can be seen as a necessary part of a privacy concept. (It's only been a few days since I accidentally saw a man's naked bottom on his phone when he wanted to show me something else. This was a business situation and he really felt absolutely embarassed. For me, this was quite funny, but experiencing something like that from the opposite side is not my strongest ambition.)

That's also the reason why I would prefer folders not to be automatically created by date. Instead I'd enjoy being able to create own folders by theme and manually move the pictures there. As others might wish to easily copy the latest photos to their computer, folders by date should probably be an option, too. :-)

In addition, It would be great to be able not to show a preview of the folder or to be able to chose an icon instead. If I want to show some pictures to a stranger, I don’t necessarily want him to see pictures of my family while I’m browsing for the good folder.

Well, I can only agree. Folder sorting is one of those basic things that I don't even know why the Jolla lacks them. It's like a motorboat without an engine.
