Hello everybody, hello @Jolla

will Jolla have a version of SailfishOS supporting the new device from Planet Computer the Cosmo Communicator?

What does the SailfishOS community think of having this device supported? I'm really looking forward of having a great device with a great keyboard etc..

The Cosmos Communicator is the follower of the successful Gemini PDA.

It would be great to get this device on the list of supported devices for SailfishOS; Also stating the fact that Sailfish OS is already running on the Planets Gemini PDA.

Thank you for your input.

Greetings megalith

13.12.2019 - Cosmo Communicator received. Now If we could get the one or other information about how and where people can take part in developing and or helping testing etc. This would be great. Thank you @jolla and or any community member knows more. Also would it be for sure necessary to be able to use it as a daily driver to get a reasonable Android support (version 8 or even better 9 or 10 ;))! I guess a lot of people would pay for it as well.

Please take this in consideration and lets share information which is available jet to support the sails with wind ;). THANK YOU

10.02.2019 - No furhter news yet. At least I have not found any furhter news. Also does it seem that the comunity port will be created by magic :) ... does anybody have a link or a connection or any information on how somebody could take part in developing, testing, etc.?

I wish I had the funds to get myself a decent Christmas present (that would arrive next year)...

@Direc Funnily enough it might even miss the christmas 2019 as 'rare kb layouts' batch is still in china, so could be next next year for some

Ok, so I now have the Cosmo. And I'd like Sailfish on it! I have Sailfish on the Gemini and it works fine for me.

So what do we need -- umm, the layout for the flash plus whatever tweaks are necessary for the HAL and ... anything else? Well, ideally the driver and app for the front screen, it looks useful, especially as I want to use it as a phone.

Same here. Since yesterday owner of a Planet Cosmo Communicator running Android 9. An yesterday they announced it will support booting for other OS as well, two debian flavors are on a list of four: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator?utm_source=sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=bck-12092019update&utm_term=#/updates/all

So, Jolla, how about Sailfish X? It was more or less promised last year. I know, I've read the announcement in Jolla blog about Xperia 10... not really what we're waiting for. An yes, we'^re aware of your limited resources. But how about something more attractive? Port it to a high end device, to FairPhone 3 (now that would be the perfect solution), or to a keyboard device like the Cosmo Comm.

The fact that Jolla did not mention the cosmo on the latest blog post regarding their special offer for SFOS speaks for itself. The official reply from James when being especially ask about that reads: "The special offer applies to the supported Xperia devices, as you may see in the table featured in this blog. We cannot speak on behalf of another company, therefore we encourage you to get directly in touch with Planet Computers."

Knowing Jolla for quite some time now, this reads like "there will be a supported community port (without Android layer) at best" to me.

@melg01, how is this with the Gemini PDA; Does the SailfishOS have a Droid emulation running? thx

megalith ( 2019-12-15 01:16:44 +0300 )edit

@megalith: There is an official community version of SFOS for the Gemini PDA available, which from my knowledge does not include the Android layer and text prediction parts. That's the reason the license for it is cheaper (30€ instead of 50).

From the recent commitment of Jolla for the Cosmo (or more: the lack of it), I suspect we'll see the same "offer" for it (SFOS without Android Emulation / Text Input prediction). That would be a big pity.

If the device sees the light of day, I'm game.

Can anyone having experience with GeminiPDA could comment on the level of support given? Seriously considering Cosmo and would be a shame if it is pre-pre-alpha kind of working with just touchscreen and sound (kb, bt, 4g etc is working fine? the second screen and fingerprint scanner don't really care)

I am a gemini PDA/sailfish user. I just upgraded to and love it. I have also ordered the cosmo, and hope to run sailfish on that too. For those worried about sailfish on the gemini/cosmo, it works well. There are still a few niggles, however they are being addressed with each release. The latest release supports the gemini enough that you don't have to "hack" anything (fully supported landscape screen etc). The cosmo should be ready by May, so I would think sailfish will be ready for it :)

Same here. I also have a gemini PDA updated to Jollas SailfishOS V EA. And it worked for me without problems. WLan, mobil data, store, anything i tried seems ok. Info: On the EA release is no third party licensed software (but this is ok, you also did not buy th EA release ..).

The same question was asked by @manu007 at "Cosmo Communicator supported or not" and answered by @veskuh (a Jolla employee) in a comment to an answer there per

Yes, we stated that we'll look into supporting it with the community. It was not an announcment about Jolla making an officially supported port for it.

Unfortunately this is Jolla's current, "official" position (which basically uses the same wording to state the same as in their earlier blog post).

P.S.: @veskuh also introduced the same clarification the the "rumored devices" section of "[Wiki] Available devices, plus rumored and legacy devices, running Sailfish OS, emphasising Jolla's position.

Great idea, but it looks so massive in physical size.

Remember the first portable cell phone?

This is my idea of a more sutiable phone: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jelly-the-smallest-4g-smartphone

I have supported the Cosmo only because they, and Jolla, promises Sailfish for the device.

Kim ( 2018-12-02 10:16:59 +0300 )edit

Well, I already have Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra. Jelly?

I'm sorry, I'll just walk myself out of the door (:
