Hello Sailors!

I stumbled across Picross in Jolla Store a year back, but it didn't work at all. At some point a fatal bug had slipped in the release version, or something, but there was a patch for it already. I tested it and it worked - and I liked the game, too. I decided to fix the application properly and publish it, and ended up rewriting some parts of it.

This gave me an idea; are there any other community-provided applications that you would like to use, but are no longer maintained? Submit your suggestions in answers, and I see what I can do :)

Edit: This question was inspired by Sailfish Devember, so make sure you check out that, too!

Edit: Translators are always needed! Many of the projects I picked up are not quite up to date... Please consider helping the community by translating a few applications if you can spare an hour or two.

How are the projects progressing, you ask? First the more active ones:

  • GPSInfo
    • Mostly done for now at least
    • Bar chart component may have to be re-implemented (without qcharts.js...)
  • YTplayer
    • Uses custom-made "youtube-dl-lite" for speed
(It means youtube-dl script execution kind of speed, not download faster speed :)
  • Battery Buddy
    • Finally supports automatically pausing/resuming charging the battery!
    • Landscape orientation support
    • No longer Jolla Store compatible; only from OpenRepos from now on

Then the ones that haven't had much attention lately, but forgotten they are not, trust me:

  • CarBudget: Pushed layout fixes to condo4, hopefully he still updates the app... (11.2.2019)
  • SailKino: major UI rework done and released (25.2.2019)
  • CountMe 2: Screen blanking prevention added. (12.2.2019)
  • Picross 2: Updated welcome screen, translations added. (12.2.2019)

The future of these ones is unclear to me (but you can help, too):

  • Daedalus: It compiled and ran almost out-of-the box!
  • SMPC: Not started yet.
  • PhoneHook: Not started yet, but definitely on my list :)
  • Call Flasher: In consideration. It may be possible, but the results may be poor. Looking at it later this year.
  • Squeeze UI: In consideration. It's hard to test this, as I don't have a Squeebox... https://openrepos.net/content/pawelspoon/squeeze-ui-remote-ps
  • File Browser (although it is not abandoned): I am implementing support for other applications to open files and folders in the application. Serious nerd snipe at the moment! Need to learn D-Bus first...
  • Swipe URL in browser toolbar right/left in order to go back/forward - updated to latest sailfish, forked, with pull request, also released on OpenRepos

Even abondend apps on OpenRepos that with some TLC may find their way in the Jolla store?

I miss "Daily Comics" from tardypad on OpenRepos: https://openrepos.net/content/tardypad/daily-comics

Code is here:

https://github.com/tardypad/sailfishos-daily-comics

And maybe you can improve it by enabling users to edit and fix the comics definitions/urls.

Daedalus Musicplayer: https://openrepos.net/content/djselbeck/daedalus-musicplayer

In my eyes the best player for SailfishOS, but unfortunately no longer able to get/display album information since Sailfish 2.1.4.14

This is actually quite cool! Logitech has discontinued the product line, it seems, but I guess I could have a quick look at it. Is there something broken currently? The devices don't seem to be available anymore... Another cool piece of tech I discovered too late :(

Edit: Okay, I stumbled upon this blog post and my interest jumped quite a bit, as I do have a RasPi in a very convenient location regarding music playback!

Direc ( 2018-12-16 12:16:20 +0300 )edit

@Direc: it is all now open source and there is picoplayer that you can install on rasp. i am now running 3 orginal squeezeboxes and one picoplayer.

i had a deeper look on the control. the only thing that does not work for me is the volume control. the reason for this is: the ui is optimized for jolla 1, on intext and xperiax the slider overlays some buttons. so that would be all to do. the other thing is: there is no deployable for tablet .. (which i do not need, but there is an open issue)

the app does not follow the standard sdk build, so i am not sure if i can build it with my dummy knowledge, but what i could do is: i can fork it and bring it into my repo. i will try to build it. if i fails, if somebody can help me ....

pawel ( 2018-12-21 08:13:05 +0300 )edit

Oh. That raises my interest significantly! Let's see if I can make it compile... Edit: Oh you already did! So I'll fork your repo and see how it goes :)

Direc ( 2018-12-21 20:21:35 +0300 )edit

Okay, piCorePlayer eats a whole RasPi... I don't have one to spare just for that, so testing has to wait a bit. I'll look at this again next year. Nice work so far!

Is the layout issue still there?

Direc ( 2018-12-21 20:36:05 +0300 )edit

i did adapt it a bit but do need a solution for all the different sizes.. need to find a solution yet

I'm checking it out!

It looks like I have to downgrade myself a Sailfish 1.x or 2.x, luckily I still have my Jolla 1 so I can see how it is supposed to work!

I do not see point of fork Daedalus, because we have unplayer, that's is basically same application.. Also unplayer is still under development.

Better idea would be help to enchance unplayer even more better, like add equalizer and so on.

And I know that even there is one application it doesn't mean it's waste of time to create alternative application. But I don't see it relevant idea until we have everything important applications. You know.

@Direc you chooses but reconsider first, there is many other more important applications.

Jk ( 2018-12-05 22:59:06 +0300 )edit

I liked a lot the ability to download artist and album pictures automatically that Daedalus had; I don't think Unplayer supports it?

Federico ( 2018-12-06 01:35:21 +0300 )edit

In my eyes, daedalus has a number of advantages over upnplayer:

  • Able to use the SailfishOS trackerDB directly => it follows any change in the collection "automatically". Unplayer runs its own DB and requires you to update it each time you change something in your collection - I find that highly annoying.
    • I like the way daedalus handles play queues much better
    • I find the deadalus interface much easier to use, which is in part due to its similarity to SMPC, which I use frequently. The idea of having these two apps so similar was a really good one of the original author.
    • I like the handling of album and artist images much better in daedalus
    • daedalus supports plain-text playlists, which allows me to change them with a text editor, if I want to (does not happen often, but it does happen). Those playlists are even readable by the Sailfish-player...

I actually think that daedalus is much further in development than unplayer (as in: I do not remember missing any features) - it's only that something in the backend broke due to a SailfishOS change.

@Direc - I have not upgraded to 2.2.xxx or higher yet, but on 2.1.x, daedalus is running and you can add songs to the play queue and play them, but as all album information is missing, any sorting does not work, nor do album images and anything else related to that information. As mentioned above, SMPC works and looks very similar to daedalus, so if you happen to have an mpd running somewhere, you can use that for an impression as well. Also, I'm not much of a programmer, but I'd be very happy to help with testing should you need somebody to do so.

dyraig ( 2018-12-06 10:52:30 +0300 )edit

Daedalus is inspired by SMPC, which is a mpd client. Actually I did some work on SMPC and daedalus. The plan was unifiying the components used by both players.

But I guess it's too big for me beside my other projects...

@Direc maybe we could work together on SMPC and daedalus

  • Web Pirate (Edit: Accidentaly wrote Webcat, but that is still in very active developement. Sorry Leszek!)

I think YTPlayer only needs an updated version of the youtube-dl. Also a feature to update it from the app would be good to make it "future proof". Haven't used other you listed, so no comments on those. ☺

raketti ( 2018-12-06 12:44:12 +0300 )edit

to make ytplayer work you should open a terminal and update YouTube-dl via curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/share/harbour-ytplayer/bin/youtube-dl and then chmod a+rx /usr/share/harbour-ytplayer/bin/youtube-dl

but i perfectly agree, an option to have the update inside the app would be wonderful ...

Nice! Thanks for the tip @247!

raketti ( 2018-12-06 19:00:12 +0300 )edit

@247 I think that could be done within YouTube-dl... I see what I can do :)

Direc ( 2018-12-07 09:57:32 +0300 )edit

@LemD I think you need, because user nemo can't write to /usr/share/ or its subfolders. There may be a way to relocate the binary to user data path instead. If that is possible, then I can (try to) implement updating the component directly from the application.

Had a quick look at it. A simple recompile fixes the daemon crashes. Only thing I do not see working is the restore of the previous ambience (but general profile is restored).

@adekker Could you maybe upload your build somewhere? I have the feeling the original developer is not interesting in providing new builds.

@adekker thanks so much! Do you know whether its possible to start the daemon upon boot e.g. via systemctl or a custom rc.local file which I already have set up?

This is the openrepos version, which already has an autostart for the daemon build in. Better reboot the phone after installation, so the daemon gets properly replaced.

  1. PhoneHook or Scumstopper
  2. Call recorder because recording calls don't work anymore -- That was due to a bug in Sailfish. Recording works again in 3.0.1.11.

I had completely forgotten about PhoneHook...

I am not going to have a look at Call Recorser, since I use the built-in functionality and I have no motivation to switch over, sorry. Well, perhaps later, but not anytime soon at least.

Direc ( 2018-12-10 20:29:40 +0300 )edit

PhoneHook and CallRecorder seem to cause issues when upgrading SailfishOS (mentioned in each and every SailfishOS' release notes for years).
IMO, this is their primary flaw. If that cannot be solved, it may make sense to leave these two apps abandoned.

olf ( 2018-12-22 23:32:38 +0300 )edit

The author of PH claims it is no longer an issue.

I haven't done anything to PhoneHook on upgrade since developer said it is not needed. Never had any problem.

mSorvisto ( 2019-02-25 18:54:23 +0300 )edit

@olf: neither Phonehook nor Call Recorder have caused any issues for a very long time. In fact, Call Recorder had already received an update to fix the problem before the Sailfish update that broke it was released. I don't understand why Jolla keeps adding that tidbit to the release notes.

Sailimgur

Its an app for the social media website Imgur. I like the app very much and compared to the original android app it is superb in every way. But for quite some time the problems are adding up: since short videos are not mainly gifs anymore very often the single posts of imgur won't load at all or can crash the app. big gifs crash the app, videos with sounds are silent etc. etc...

Similar to this app is Gagbook for the 9Gag page, basically the same content while Imgur is usually more original and more US centered 9Gag is more international. But lately the 9Gag app has been adopted too and now it works very good and often i use this to look at the same content that sailimgur fails to show correctly.

I guess looking into the media-playing section should give some indication last update was 2016 and considering the changes we had in SFOS since then I think its needed to link maybe the actual libs to the code again.

The best case is that recompiling the app fixes a bunch... I'll have a quick look at it at some point.

Does someone know if Sailfish has webp support?

Direc ( 2018-12-20 16:34:23 +0300 )edit

Hi @Direc, sorry for late reply but somehow I just now realized that I can answer this question myself: I tried this link https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/gallery1 which is an example gallery from google. In my current Firefox on my computer I can't see the webp pictures therefore also not in the Sailfish Browser. But if you download the file you can just normally open it in the gallery and see it. SO as long as you can use the same mechanisms as the gallery the app might view also these pictures.
